Johnson sisters set records

Collegiate Check-up

Honors abounded for area athletes this week.

Alyssa Johnson earned her latest accolade on the track, breaking her own Taylor University record in the 1,500-meter run. Her sister, Amanda, helped Indiana Wesleyan win a National Christian College Athletic Association championship while setting a record as well.

Holly Stein brought home the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Women's Field Athlete award for the second straight season. Tyler Rigby was honored as the top male athlete at Indiana University - East. And Josh Atkinson was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher at Manchester College.

Alyssa Johnson, a 2006 Jay County High School graduate, set her record at the NCCAA Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.

She was less than two seconds away from an NCCAA title as she finished the 1,500 run in 4-minutes, 37.78 seconds. She was the runner-up to Cedarville's Lydia Wong, but still broke her own school record in the event to earn the No. 11 ranking in the NAIA.

She will compete in the NAIA Outdoor Championships at Southern Illinois University May 21-23.

Amanda Johnson (Jay County - 2008) was part of an NCCAA championship for the host Wildcats. She teamed with Cassidy Wagner, Angi Wolgemuth and Lindsey Waggoner to win the 4x800 relay in a track record time of 9:12.34, breaking the mark of 9:24.8 set by Indiana Wesleyan in 2002.

Alyssa Johnson also took part in two relays for the Trojans, joining Morgan Achteroff, Stephanie Kenney and LaJoya Smith for fifth in the 4x400 in 4:02.55. She also teamed with Kirstin Hegelein, Colleen Getz and Ashley Henry for a time of 10:19.24 to place eighth in the 4x800.

Amanda Johnson added an eighth-place finish in the 800 run in 2:20.01.

Stein (Fort Recovery - 2007) won her HCAC award for the second straight season on the power of her conference titles in both the discus and javelin. She also placed second in the HCAC in the shot put.

Rigby (Jay County - 2006) earned his award from IU-East after leading the Red Wolves' men's basketball team in scoring at 17 points per game. He led the team to a school-record 23 wins and was selected to the All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team.

The sophomore also averaged 3.6 rebounds per game to go along with 81 3-pointers, 53 assists, 36 steals and nine blocks in 32 games. He shot 50 percent from the field, including 42 percent from 3-point range, and 77 percent from the free-throw line.

Atkinson completed his run to the top pitcher award as he held Transylvania scoreless in each of his final two appearances.

The junior got the win May 1, tossing three scoreless innings as Manchester came back for an 8-5 victory. He gave up just a single hit while striking out three batters.

Atkinson gave up just two hits and a walk in four innings May 2 as the Spartans topped Transylvania 13-8. He struck out two batters and improved his season record to 7-3.

He finished the season with twice as many wins as any other Manchester pitcher and a team-best 3.11 ERA. He struck out 42 batters in 63 2/3 innings.

Thomas McCowan

Jay County - 2008

Put together an impressive day May 2 despite his IPFW baseball team's 19-10 loss in the first game of a double-header against Western Illinois.

McCowan started the game at designated hitter, moved to third base and then took a turn on the mound, where he pitched a perfect inning. He finished off the game for the Mastodons, striking out one batter in a one-two-three frame.

The freshman also finished with a pair of hits. He singled in the seventh inning and later scored on an RBI single by Joel Washko, and also had a single in the eighth.

McCowan also pitched in the second game of the double-header, a 12-6 loss, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning. He added a pinch-hit single in the final game of the series against Western Illinois as IPFW lost 10-5 Sunday.

Josh Shatto

Jay County - 2006

Also pitched for IPFW in the second game of the May 2 double-header.

Shatto was hurt by miscues in his inning as Western Illinois scored six unearned runs. He allowed three runs and four walks while striking out one batter.[[In-content Ad]]
