Johnson wins 1st race (02/07/2009)

Collegiate Check-up

The first race of Amanda Johnson's collegiate track and field career was a rousing success.

The 2008 Jay County High School graduate won her first race for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's track team Jan. 31 as the Wildcats hosted their 2009 Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Johnson, who ran for the IWU women's cross country team this fall, dominated the 1,000-meter run. She finished in 3-minutes, 13.4 seconds, more than 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Brianna Adkins of Bethel.

The freshman earned a state medal with a ninth-place finish in the 800 run last season, and was a three-time state qualifier in the event.

Led the IU-East men's basketball team to victory Thursday with his seventh straight double-digit scoring game of the season.

Rigby shot 9-of-16 from the field for a game-high 20 points in the Red Wolves' 87-70 victory over Asbury College. He also had eight rebounds, two assists and a steals as IU-East improved to 19-7.

The sophomore also totaled 14 points, two rebounds and a steal Jan. 31 in a loss to IU-Southeast.

The junior had one point and one rebound against IU-Southeast.

Mitchell Thomas

Ian Thomas fought off teammate Stephen Boedicker by 0.26 seconds to earn the runner-up spot in the event with a time of 15-minutes, 43.9 seconds. It was fourth-fastest time in the race in Rose-Hulman history.

Mitchell Thomas finished five spots behind his twin brother with a time of 16:02.83.
