Johnsons compete at Indiana Wesleyan (10/11/2008)

Alyssa Johnson had the better individual finish. But her younger sister's team picked up the win.

The Johnson sisters battled against each other Oct. 4 at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational, where freshman Amanda's host Wildcats (32) finished first ahead of junior Alyssa's Taylor University Trojans (53).

Alyssa Johnson, a 2006 Jay County High School graduate, led the Taylor women's cross country team and finished third overall. She recorded a new career-best time of 18-minutes, 50 seconds in the 5K race.

Amanda Johnson (JCHS - 2008) placed 17th in the field of 65 runners. She turned in a time of 20 minutes even.

The sisters will meet again Oct. 25 at the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich., and at the Mid-Central Conference Championships Nov. 11 at Spring Arbor University.

Tiff Gaerke

Fort Recovery - 2007

Bumped up her career-high in kills once again Oct. 3 in the University of Dayton women's volleyball team's four-game win over George Washington.

Gaerke, who had 14 kills a week earlier against the University of Albany, racked up 18 to lead the Flyers over GW. She recorded a mammoth .400 attacking percentage while adding four digs, three blocks and an ace.

The sophomore had 10 kills and two digs in a loss Tuesday to Cincinnati, and totaled seven kills, four blocks and three digs in Sunday's victory over Charlotte.

Gaerke had 175 kills on the season to go along with 46 digs, 36 blocks, four assists and an ace.

Jay County - 2005

Helped the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's cross country team to victory Oct. 4 at the eight-team Earlham Invitational.

Ian Thomas turned in the No. 2 time for the Engineers, finishing third overall in 26 minutes, 52 seconds.

His twin brother Mitchell placed 16th at 27:39.

Jill Roughia

Jay County - 2005

Recorded the No. 2 time Oct. 4 for the Huntington University women's cross country team, which hosted the Homecoming E. Dewitt Baker Invitational.

Roughia broke the 21-minute barrier, finishing the race in 20-minutes, 56 seconds. She was fourth overall.

Trisha Champ

Jay County - 2008

Posted the fourth-best score for the IUPUI women's golf team Monday and Tuesday at the Butler Fall Invitational.

Champ shot rounds of 81 and 83 at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Indianapolis. Playing as an individual, the freshman's score of 164 was good for 33rd place.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Started at left guard for the Hanover College football team Oct. 4 in its 56-12 loss to Anderson.

Vormohr played on the offensive line that block for 281 yards of total offense, including 226 through the air from quarterback Nick Sharp.[[In-content Ad]]
