Junior Leaders will collect food
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Trick or Treat usually makes one think of candy and goodies dropped into a bag held by little ones in ghost, clowns, or beauty queen costumes.
However, the Jay County 4-H Junior Leaders are giving Trick or Treating a whole new meaning this year. They will soon be out, decked out in costume to “trick or treat so others can eat” on Halloween night.
This is a 4-H community service project benefiting our local communities.
The Junior Leaders’ goal is to visit as many local merchants, who usually participate in the “Trick or Treat Night” in Portland, that were invited to participate by donating the some or all of the following items: cans of green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, canned cream of mushroom soup, fried onions, instant mashed potatoes, corn bread mix, Jell-O, cake mix with icing, canned cranberries, gravy mix and stuffing mix by Halloween Night, Oct. 31.
The Junior Leaders will then come around during the scheduled hours for Trick or Treat and pick up the bags of food that will be taken to the Jay County food bank in order to be distributed to those in need during Thanksgiving so families can enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal.
If you are interested in participating, whether a merchant or not, you can bring your bag of non-perishable goods to Jay County’s Purdue Extension Office at 126 N. Meridian St. in Portland during the office hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday prior to Oct. 31. All donated items will go to the Jay County Food Bank.
Working together, all of us, we can and are making a difference!
For more information, please contact Cara Kobza, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, at [email protected] or (260) 726-4707.
