Kahlig best in MAC, district
FRHS basketball
A year ago, Greg Kahlig was the best player in the MAC. For his senior season, he conquered the district as well.
The Fort Recovery High School senior was named the Midwest Athletic Conference and Northwest District boys basketball Player of the Year recently.
His coach, Brian Patch, also brought home the big awards as he was voted Coach of the Year in both the MAC and district.
Cody Fiely added second-team All-MAC honors for the Tribe, and Craig Tobe earned honorable mention.
Nicole Pottkotter and Chelsey Leuthold were each first-team selections for the girls team, and Kendra Brunswick picked up honorable mention.
Kahlig, who is averaging 26.4 points per game this season, is Fort Recovery's all-time leading scorer and ranks fourth in MAC history with 1,639 points.
He will likely pass Mendon's Bob Howell (1,648 points) for third place in the Indians' next tournament game - Tuesday's district semifinal against Ottoville at Wapakoneta - and is just 105 points behind league scoring champion Kyle Gehle of Versailles.
The senior, who earned first-team all-district and third-team all-state honors last season, leads the Tribe in rebounds (11.4 per game), assists (102), blocks (37), steals (36) and 3-pointers (37) while shooting 51 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free-throw line.
Patch has coached Division IV No. 8 Fort Recovery to an 18-3 record this season, and its first MAC title since 1999.
Leuthold led the Indian girls team in scoring at 13.2 points per game while adding 5.2 rebounds. Pottkotter (8.2 points per game) was the team leader in rebounds (6.4 per game), assists (55), steals (53) and blocks (15).
Fiely averages 8.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the FRHS boys, and Tobe comes in at 9.2 points and 5.5 boards per contest.
Brunswick was second in scoring for the Tribe girls this year at 9.9 points per game. She hit 37 3-pointers.
