FORT RECOVERY - Friday night was all about Greg Kahlig.
Receiving the inlet pass in the post and bouncing hard off the defense, Kahlig hit a shot from the right block for a hoop-plus-one to put him over 1,000 points for his career.
The Fort Site Fieldhouse was buzzing with anticipation at the start of the second half as Kahlig loomed on the brink with six points, 999 total, at the midway point.
The crowd erupted in cheers as Kahlig, a junior who finished with 21 points on the evening as Fort Recovery beat Marion Local 53-46, took a moment to salute the crowd as the referees handed over the game ball. He headed to the sidelines and gave a hug to his parents, leaving the souvenir with them as he went to the charity stripe to complete the three-point play that put him at 1,002 career points about two minutes into the third.
Kahlig, the only junior to ever hit the 1,000-point mark, will spend the next year-plus trying to chase down1969 alum Ken Heiby, who holds the FRHS career scoring record at 1,418 points. With one season to go and averaging about 24 points per game this year, the goal is definitely reachable for Kahlig.
The Indians (12-5, 4-4 Midwest Athletic Conference) overcome a small deficit at the beginning of the game and then never looked back after an 11-7 first, as they led the rest of the way.
The Tribe's first half defense smothered the Flyers, holding the visitors to just 25 percent from the field on 5-of-20 shooting in the first half. The Flyers launched 24 3-pointers out of 43 field-goal attempts, but connected on just eight.
Fort Recovery picked up 18 points from the free-throw line on the night, hitting 75 percent.
Kahlig led all scorers with his 21, and he also grabbed nine rebounds.
Frank Thien added 12 points and five assists, and Brent Faller drilled 11 points in only 13 minutes off the bench for the Indians.
Troy Prenger and Nathan Thobe led the Flyer's in the losing effort with 13 and 10 points respectively.
In junior varsity action, Shane Brunswick scored 17 points for the Tribe, which lost 44-33 to Marion Local.[[In-content Ad]]
