Kahlig racks up 38
FRHS boys basketball
COLDWATER, Ohio - If Greg Kahlig keeps up his recent pace, he will blow by Kevin Dilworth and Ken Heiby in a hurry.
Kahlig, currently the No. 3 scorer in Fort Recovery High School boys basketball history, followed up his 42-point effort Dec. 22 with 38 points Thursday in the opening round of the Coldwater Classic. His effort, which also included 14 rebounds, led the Indians to a 59-47 victory over the Fort Loramie Redskins.
The Tribe will play the host Cavaliers, who topped Delphos Jefferson 57-50 Tuesday, in today's championship game at 8 p.m.
After posting the fourth-best scoring game in FRHS history against Waynesfield-Goshen, Kahlig kept his hot streak going versus the Redskins. He shot 11-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and 11-of-12 from the foul line for his game-high total.
In just six games this year he has already hit 51 free throws. All of his 14 rebounds came on the defensive end, and he also had five assists and two blocks.
With 80 points in his last two games, Kahlig stands at 1,261 for his career, 102 behind Dilworth and 157 behind Heiby on the all-time FRHS list. He has also given himself a chance to take the school's overall scoring title of 1,529 points from Lynn (Bihn) Hughes.
He became just the third player in Tribe history, joining Heiby and Tom Bryan, to have multple games of 38 or more points.
Fort Recovery (6-0) took the lead for good less than four minutes into the game, and used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to pull away. The Indians led by as many as 21 points before Fort Loramie scored the last seven of the game for the final margin.
Craig Tobe followed Kahlig with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Mark Frilling shot 7-of-11 from the field and led the Redskins with 16 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Justin Hoying added 12 points.
In the junior varsity tournament, Fort Recovery dropped a 23-21 decision to Fort Loramie. Shane Brunswick led the Indians, who played in the consolation game today against Delphos Jefferson, with 13 points.[[In-content Ad]]
