Kaup scores in first game for Orange softball (02/26/05)

Collegiate check-up

Joscie Kaup didn’t waste much time making an impact on the Syracuse softball team.

Kaup, who played libero for the Orange volleyball team this fall, joined the softball team as a pinch runner and scored a run in her first action.

Kaup scored one of just two runs an upset of UCLA as she ran for Cassie Morales. Morales reached base on a single, and Kaup entered and scored on a home run by Courtney Mosch in a 2-1 victory over the third-ranked Bruins Feb. 13.

She pinch-ran for Morales again against South Carolina Sunday, scoring a run in a 10-3 victory.

Sara Heitkamp

The Fort Recovery graduate put up some big numbers, but the fourth-seeded Capital University women’s basketball team still dropped out of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament this week.

Heitkamp notched a double-double against No. 1 seed Wilmington (23-4), finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds. However, it was not enough for the Crusaders (20-6) to overcome a 26-5 deficit.

She hit four 3-pointers in the game, and also had four steals and one assist.

The junior had team highs of 20 points, six points and four steals in Capital’s 71-53 first-round win over Marietta. She added six rebounds.

Heitkamp also had 31 points, one off her career high, in an 84-68 loss to Baldwin-Walalce in the regular-season finale Feb. 19. She had six steals, three assists and three rebounds as well.

Amy Meyer

The graduate of South Adams led an outstanding 3-point shooting effort as the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team won its first-round game in the Mid-Central College Conference tournament.

Meyer hit four triples as the No. 22 Cougars finished 10-of-19 overall from long distance in the 88-69 victory Tuesday over Huntington College. She finished the contest with 12 points, and added three rebounds.

She also had 10 points in a 79-63 loss to 21st-ranked Taylor University Feb. 19.

Joanie Muhlenkamp

The graduate of Jay County helped the Taylor University Fort Wayne women’s basketball team as it knocked off Southern State Community College Feb. 19.

Muhlenkamp finished second on the team with seven rebounds. She also had six points and a couple of steals.

Tyler Niekamp

The Fort Recovery graduate got into the act as the Findlay University men’s basketball team rebounded from just its third loss of the season with a 92-59 thumping of Ashland Feb. 19.

Niekamp, a freshman, notched a point per minute as he finished with five. He made two of his three field-goal attempts, including his only 3-point try, and added one rebound and one steal.

Steph Welch

A South Adams graduate, she posted a third-place finish as the Bluffton University women’s track team finished third at an eight-team meet at Ohio Northern Feb. 18.

Welch had her best effort in the high jump, placing third with a leap of five feet, 1.75 inches. She was also 10th in the 800 meter run in 2-minutes, 38.42 seconds.

Amanda Habegger

A former teammate of Welch’s with the Starfires, who now also competes at Bluffton, she placed fifth in both of her events at Ohio Northern.

She finished just behind ONU’s Jaclyn Kessler in the 500-meter run, finishing fifth by just 28 hundredths in 1-minute, 25.65 seconds. She placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles as well in 9.71 seconds.

Abby Arnold

A graduate of Jay County, she took part in one relay as the Ball State women’s track team swam to sixth place at the first day of the Mid-American Conference championships Thursday.

Arnold joined Ashley VanOsdol, Sara Welter and Karla Bailey to place seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The championships continued Friday and will be completed today.[[In-content Ad]]
