Kirby is named interim clerk (10/31/05)
REDKEY — Redkey resident Sandy Kirby, a former auditor with the Indiana State Board of Accounts, was named interim clerk-treasurer this morning by town council president Violet Erlenbush.
Erlenbush made the appointment during an emergency meeting of the council.
Although she had the authority to make the decision, Erlenbush said she wanted the support of her fellow council members before naming a replacement for long-time clerk Brenda Adkins, who abruptly quit last week.
Kirby will serve in the position until a caucus of Democratic committeemen from Redkey select someone for the remaining portion of the clerk’s term, which will end Dec. 31, 2007.
Kirby, who was present at this morning’s meeting, said she planned to begin working today on preparing a $7,200 bond payment the town has due.
She will then focus on issuing payroll to town employees. Adkins, who resigned with a two-sentence letter filed in the office of the Jay County Clerk, did not prepare payroll last week for the normal Friday payday.
“That sounds good to me,” Kirby said after Erlenbush signed paperwork appointing her to the position. “I know it’s a very devastating situation, but we’ve got to get back to square one.”
Also present this morning were council members Dixie Toy, Dottie Quakenbush and Darrell Smith. Councilman Jim Guffey was not present.
The council met in the clerk-treasurer’s office because auditors from the State Board of Accounts are still working in the council chambers and asked not to be disturbed.
Adkins’ resignation came after what town attorney John Brooke called “irregularities” in the ongoing audit.[[In-content Ad]]
