Kirby not planning to run for re-election
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Filing for many state, county and township offices begins Wednesday. I now serve in the county council seat for Richland Township, which is the Dunkirk/Redkey area. At the end of 2010 I will have served for 16 years. I wish to thank you for trusting me to represent our area as a Jay County Councilman. It is now time for me to step aside. I will not file for re-election.
There have been many changes over the past years, and I am proud to have been a part of some of them. Economic development, community development and Jay County Chamber of Commerce are all strong and active.
The county dump is gone, and a well-managed landfill now has replaced it. From the unloading fees an infrastructure fund has been set up to pay for many projects throughout the county, without tax dollars.
The addition of paramedics to our ambulance service has no doubt saved lives. The new jail is well into construction and should put us in good state for many years to come.
Most of all, our county is on a strong financial footing and that is not a statement many of the counties around us can make. The council has made the hard decisions and took the political heat to protect our county from the cash shortfalls and disasters that are plaguing others.
Again, I thank you for your trust and confidence. It has been humbling and an honor to serve District 1 on the Jay County Council.
Gerald R. Kirby
Redkey
An angel
To the editor:
Since I have gotten older, I am unable to do many of the things I used to do such as clearing snow off my sidewalks and driveway. But, myself and many of my neighbors have an angel.
He gets a snowblower, bundles up, and does the walks and driveways (including his own).
He doesn't ask for anything in doing this good deed, but I'm sure that my neighbors agree with me - we are thankful he is our neighbor. He has come to my rescue on other occasions, too.
One doesn't see the wings or the halo, but a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye, as he goes about doing good deeds for us.
Thank you can never be said enough times. He's a friend, a good neighbor, a good husband and father, and well-liked by many. Perhaps you know him or someone like him. Thanks again to our neighbor angel.
