Kirby tapped to fill clerk post in Redkey (11/23/05)

By By ROBERT BANSER-

REDKEY — It’s official.

Sandy Kirby is the new clerk-treasurer in Redkey.

Meeting in a special caucus Tuesday night, Redkey Democratic leaders unanimously chose Kirby, who has been serving as the interim clerk-treasurer, to fill the unexpired term of Brenda Adkins who resigned abruptly from that post in late October.

About a dozen Democrats turned out for the caucus at Jay County Democratic headquarters in Portland, but only Redkey’s two precinct committee chairpersons were eligible to vote.

Calinda Anderson, from North Redkey Precinct, and Luella Dibattiste, from South Redkey Precinct each cast ballots for Kirby.

If there had been a tie, Tim Southworth, chairman of the Jay County Democratic Party, would have voted to break the tie. Southworth said he was also in favor of Kirby.

Four other persons submitted letters expressing interest in the position. None of them had ever held an elected office.

Southworth said that he wanted to thank the other applicants, and suggested they consider seeking office in a future election.

Southworth said the “bar had been set rather high” with the application of Kirby, a longtime resident of the community, who also served as town clerk-treasurer previously for eight years and later worked for 20 years with the Indiana State Board of Accounts. She and her husband, Gerald, live at 30 S. Union St., Redkey.

“Sandy’s been with our party through thick and thin,” Southworth said. “I know that she will do a good job. I understand the situation there (with finances in Redkey) is a mess right now,” he added.

Sandy Kirby said Tuesday that Indiana State Board of Accounts employees are continuing with their work at town hall to audit financial records.

Southworth told fellow Democrats that he received a copy of Adkins’ two-sentence letter of resignation on Oct. 28, and the Democrats had 30 days to name a replacement. The term of office expires at the end of 2007.

Following the unanimous vote, Sandy Kirby said, “I appreciate your vote of confidence tonight. Hopefully, everybody will be patient with us and work with us.”

Priot to Tuesday night’s vote, Redkey town council member Dottie Quakenbush, a Democrat, voiced her support for Kirby. Quakenbush said she has been concerned about the financial condition of the town and is happy to welcome Kirby on board.

The new clerk-treasurer announced that the Redkey town council will meet in special session at 10 a.m. on Monday to approve payment of claims and possibly hire a third full-time police officer to fill a vacancy on that department.

That meeting will be held in Redkey Town Hall.[[In-content Ad]]
