Koesters leads Tribe to second MAC win (12/14/07)

MINSTER, Ohio - The host Wildcats pulled to within a point in the fourth quarter. However, Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team wouldn't allow a stand-out performance by Annie Koesters to go for naught.

The Indians forced two turnovers in the final 1:03 Thursday night as they held off Minster for a 48-41 Midwest Athletic Conference victory.

Koesters starred for the Tribe with a dominating effort inside. She went 8-of-11 (73 percent) from the field and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

The junior also had a pair of blocked shots, and he shooting effort helped lead the Indians to 53 percent from the field in the second half.

Koesters hit her final hoop of the game 36 seconds into the fourth quarter, and then went to the bench less than two minutes later after picking up her fourth foul. Minster rallied from an eight-point deficit to get within 39-38 on a Kara Monnin 3-pointer with 3:39 to play.

But the Wildcats (2-3, 1-2 MAC) never pulled even, despite some Fort Recovery struggles at the free-throw line, and the visiting Tribe held on for the win.

Joanna Snyder joined Koesters in double figures for the Indians (4-2, 2-1 MAC) with 12 points. She also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Nicole Pottkotter had eight points, Kinsey Wenning scored seven and Chelsey Leuthold came up with four steals.

Austi Weitzel and Monnin led the Wildcats, who shot just 32 percent from the field compared to 46 for Fort Recovery, with nine points apiece. Lauren Ranly grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds, and Jodie Quinter had six rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Junior varsity

The Indians' offense disappeared as they went scoreless in the fourth quarter and overtime to suffer their first loss of the season 32-28 to Minster.

Fort Recovery (5-1) had a 28-22 lead going into the fourth quarter, but never scored again. It shot just 21 percent in the second half and overtime after hitting for 53 percent before the intermission.

Becca Steinemen paced the Wildcats in the comeback win with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Kelli Kemper and Ellen Gruber added six points apiece.

Olivia Thien's seven points paced the Indians. Kendra Brunswick added six points and four rebounds, and Alyssa Brackman and four assists and three steals.[[In-content Ad]]
