Lake no flooding solution

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
As I understand it, there are plans in the works to make the stone quarry near Portland into a lake in about 10 years or when it ceases operations. It would be a deep body of water, and probably a good place to fish. Not a lot of surface area to go roaring about in a motorboat, water-skiing or sailing. Swimming, maybe, if there is a shallow place somewhere. So it is just going to be a deep hole full of water. A lake. Full of water.
So now would someone explain how this will stop the flooding in Portland, when the Salamonie River is out of its banks and thousands of acres are underwater and the rain just keeps coming down? But you say, “We have a lake and the water can just go into the lake.” Remember that the lake is already full of water. Have you ever tried to pile water? It cannot be done by mortal men.
Those of you who want to stop the flooding in Portland should get your eyes off that big hole in the ground that you want to make into a lake and look instead at that big mountain of dirt just to the south of it. Start hauling it into town, jack up the buildings and raise the streets about 10 feet, and flood in Portland would be a thing of the past.
Now that is something that can be done by mortal men, but because of the cost it probably will not be done. You could, however, use the dirt to build a levee around Portland and use big pumps to pump out the water to try to keep it dry. Despite the fact that it did not work in New Orleans as the levee broke and it still flooded. Holland has had some success but they had a little boy who put his finger in the hole in the dyke and saved the country.
