Landfill to get more traffic

Dunkirk trash will be taken to Jay facility

Revenue has been up this year at Jay County Landfill. And the facility will be seeing even more traffic in 2014.
Dunkirk Mayor Dan Watson told his fellow Jay County Solid Waste Management District board members Monday that trash from the city will be coming to the landfill when it changes service companies in January.
The board also discussed advertising at a brief year-end meeting.
The decision to change trash service providers came earlier this month when Dunkirk City Council selected a bid from Waste Management. The city will have a three-year contract with the company, which will take the trash to Jay County Landfill.
Best Way, Dunkirk’s current trash service provider, takes its trash to be dumped in Modoc.
The additional trucks coming into the landfill will mean more money in tipping fees for the solid waste district, which already had a significant bump in revenue this year. The district’s balance is at $295,100.20, which is up about $90,000 from this time last year.
Board members Milo Miller Jr., Jim Zimmerman, Faron Parr, Jeannie Houchins, Randy Geesaman and Watson also talked about advertising about local recycling programs in January and doing so more frequently throughout the year.

“I think we should run that ad quarterly,” said Houchins. “I mean, keep it in their minds.”
Her fellow board members agreed, with Miller noting that it is the district board’s job to do marketing for the programs. Board members said they would discuss again in January the possibility of running local newspaper and radio ads on a quarterly basis.
In other business, the board, absent Bill Gibson:
•Learned the newly-hired Federal 2014 Clean Water Act Section 319 Grant coordinator, Tim Kroeker of Indianapolis, will be working out of the JCSWMD offices.
•Approved paying claims of $10,849.85.
•Heard from financial manager Freda Corwin that the schedule for Saturday recycling is set for 2014 and has been distributed to the groups that work at the trailers.
•Approved transfers of $500 from part-time to education contract, $500 from part-time to financial manager contract, $240.94 from utilities to phone and $163.92 from legal to educational training.[[In-content Ad]]
