Landowner happy with county service (04/27/06)

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

In response to “Farmer still unhappy” by Terry Snyder, Bryant resident, in Tuesday’s newspaper. This really gave me a chuckle. In fact, I laughed out loud. I feel the need to respond to this. I can’t figure out where to start, but here goes.

Jay County is not using taxpayer money to do the dust control. This money comes from the Infrastructure Fund that is generated by the Jay County Landfill. There have always been monies marked for road repair in this fund.

The wheel tax was designed to help fund our road maintenance and repairs. I would imagine that the counties that do not have such a tax wish they did to help offset these expenses. Most counties are in much need of road repair, as is Jay County. Jay County roads would be in worse condition if we did not have this wheel tax. I, for one, like having decent roads to drive on so I have less vehicle repair. In my line of work I feel I pay my fair share of this tax, which helps fix all the roads in Jay County.

When ditches are cleaned, any large rocks or debris is normally hauled away and the ground is leveled. I have seen this done in my township many times. The ditches are cleaned so that the fields can drain and to prevent flooding of crops.

I would think that most of the ditches are cleaned because of a complaint being made. The county cannot be responsible for every stone left behind after cleaning a ditch. I feel I am getting a lot of bang for my buck compared to hiring a private contractor to do the same job. There is always some responsibility on the part of the landowner, and yes, I am a landowner.

If this property has set for two years unused, then maybe someone else should consider farming it and getting this land’s potential from the earth. There are too many farmers wanting to cash rent property; maybe they won’t be afraid to plow the field.

Each voter has the chance to vote for who they want in office and obviously they have cast their votes for who they feel will do the best job and I’m sure they will do so each time they vote. Not everyone can be happy all the time, but most can be happy some of the time.

We all have the chance to run for a public office. Maybe you should consider this option, as you should have a lot of friends and power in your area.

Happy Jay County resident.

Prom thanks

To the editor:

We would like to publicly express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the director and staff of the Jay Community Center for allowing us to hold the Jay County High School junior/senior prom in their beautiful facility.

Upon returning from spring break, we realized the Jay County High School renovation project had progressed more quickly than had been anticipated, and it was no longer feasible to hold the event in the commons area as has traditionally been done. Fortunately, the staff of the Jay Community Center was incredibly accommodating and welcoming — going so far as to cancel Boys and Girls Club activities and closing the fitness center so that we could decorate on Friday and have a secure facility on Saturday.

We would specifically like to thank Jan Hunt, who answered all of our questions and was especially helpful during the entire process.

We would also like to thank the following businesses and individuals: Schmidt’s Carpet Sales, Albertson’s Floor Coverings, Beyond the Gilded Willow, the Jay County High School maintenance department, Kyle Stockton, Bud Heare, East Jay custodian Ed Geesaman and principal Lee Newman, the parent after-prom committee co-chaired by Jane Reinhart and Melissa Taylor, the Jay County Sheriff’s Department, Dr. Wood Barwick, Phil Ford, Jeremy Gulley, Karmella VanSkyock, the secretaries of JCHS, and all of the businesses who donated refreshments and prizes for the after-prom.

We truly feel that this year’s JCHS prom was a tremendous success, and we could not have pulled it off without the help of the Jay County community. Thanks again to all who were involved.

Sincerely,

Melanie Stockton and Kari Anderson, junior class sponsors; and Amber Kelly, Carissa Wilkins, Sara Garringer and James Heare (junior class officers)[[In-content Ad]]
