Late filers enter county primary
Filing for major party candidates closed today at noon, as those eyeing public office can set their sights on the May 4 primary.
A late flurry of filing has added candidates for several county-wide races - including commissioner and council.
Since Thursday morning, seven candidates filed for offices, including one Democratic candidate for county commissioner, candidates for two county council seats, and a Republican competitor for sheriff.
Zeb Sutton (D), 1019 W. High St., Portland, filed for the county commissioner middle district seat. As the only Democrat running for the position, he will face either incumbent commissioner Milo Miller Jr. or Roger Locker, who will face each other in a Republican primary.
Two county council seats will be decided during the primary, as the winner of the May election will then run unopposed in November.
James Phillips (D), 605 W. Main St., Redkey, entered his name for the county council district 1 seat and will face Ted Champ in the primary.
Two Republicans filed for the county council district 3 seat, Robert Vance, 126 Rayburn Drive, Portland, and Mark Iliff, 617 E. Race St., Portland, and will face off in a primary as the only two candidates for that seat.
In other council races, Lisa Barnett (D), 2338 East 200 North, filed for the county council district 4 seat, where she will face James Brewster in the primary. That primary winner will face unopposed Republican candidate Mike Rockwell in November for the seat.
For sheriff, Brian Louth (R), 646 East 200 North, Portland, will challenge current sheriff Ray Newton for his position during the primary.
Other filers since Thursday include: incumbent Noble Township trustee Leslie Dues (D), 4046 East 300 South, Portland; Linda Heitkamp (D), 5968 East 600 North, Bryant, Wabash Township trustee; and incumbent Redkey town board member Charles Noble, 123 S. Meridian St., Redkey.
