FORT RECOVERY - The numbers won't stand out in the box score. But Nicole Dilworth made a series of key plays down the stretch Thursday night.

An assist, steal, and four crucial points from the sophomore helped lift the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team from a five-point deficit to a 43-39 win over the Versailles Tigers.

"It was an MAC game, very physical, very intense," said FRHS coach Doug Bihn, whose team is now 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. "It could have went either way. We were fortunate enough to make some plays down the stretch and win this thing."

The game seemed to be swinging in the Tigers' favor as they pushed to a 38-33 lead with just over two minutes to play, but Dilworth's put-back hoop after a timeout got Fort Recovery's run started.

The Tribe passed patiently on the next possession trying to find a good look, and it came when Dilworth hit a skip pass to Nicole Pottkotter on the left side. The junior guard buried her second-3-pointer to tie the game with 1:31 to go, and about 30 seconds later Dilworth buried a pair of free throws to give the Indians the lead.

Versailles barely got the ball across half court after the Dilworth hoop when the sophomore came up with a steal. The change of possession eventually resulted in a trip to the foul line for Joanna Snyder.

The senior, who led the Tribe with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, made the first free throw and missed the second, but Kinsey Wenning was there to grab the rebound and get a put-back hoop to finish off Fort Recovery's 10-0 run.

"It was a nice play," said Bihn of Wenning's hoop, which pushed the Indians to a two-possession lead with 25 seconds to play. "I think Kelsey Wuebker tipped that. Kinsey grabbed it and put it in. It was a huge play."

Four of Dilworth's five points came in the decisive run, and she also finished with three assists, two steals and two rebounds. On a night when both teams struggled from the foul line, she buried 3-of-4.

"She played very well down the stretch for us," said Bihn. "She was crucial for us defensively. She did some nice things, made some free throws. It was a big game for a sophomore."

After trailing 5-3 early, Versailles (6-3, 1-2 MAC) took control and pushed its advantage to 19-11. But Anne Koester scored two hoops off assists from Snyder in the final 1:01 of the half to close the gap.

Although the Tigers stayed ahead throughout the third quarter, they couldn't find enough offense to truly take control of the game.

"We could never put it away," said Versailles coach Jacki Stonebraker. "That's been kind of a problem for us. We're up by five or six and people hit some threes on us and then all of a sudden it's close again."

The 3-pointer from the Indians came from Pottkotter on the opening possession of the fourth quarter to tie the game, and Koesters gave the Tribe the lead a few minutes later with a pair of free throws. Versailles pushed back ahead by five, only to have Fort Recovery run off 10 straight points on the way to the win.

Koesters, who has missed most of the year with a herniated disk, provided a lift for the Indians off the bench. She trailed only Snyder with nine points, making three of her four field-goal attempts.

"We know she's a nice player," said Bihn of Koesters, who had seen just 11 minutes of action this season before playing 13 against the Tigers. "We've just got to get her healthy again and it's going to be a big shot in the arm for us. ...

"It's going to take some time. ... We're going to ease her into it."

Karen Smith led Versailles with 10 points, Emily Frey had nine and Olivia Liette dished out four assists. Megan Campbell totaled eight points and nine rebounds, and Emily Eilerman had seven points and six boards.

Free throws and turnovers were bad for both teams.

They combined to miss 23 out of 42 free throws, and turned the ball over a total of 53 times (30 for the Tigers).

"It could have (swung the game)," said Stonebraker. "Especially the free throws for us at the end. It's kind of been a nemesis for us all year."

Fort Recovery controlled the first half on the way to a 47-35 victory over the Tigers.

Holly Brunswick went 9-of-14 from the field for 21 points and also had seven steals for the Indians, who led 24-13 at the half. Olivia Schwieterman added seven points, and Kelly Nietfeld had five rebounds.

Bethany Ahrens led Versailles with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, five rebounds and two blocks. Kelsey Schlater scored six points, and Ciara Barga had six rebounds.
