Leaders urged to secure financial future (04/28/06)

Letters to the Editor

(Editor’s note: The following letter was written to State Sen. David Ford, State Rep. Mike Ripley, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed).

To the editor:

We have not had a teacher’s contract at South Adams for the past four years, and it doesn’t look promising. I have a feeling that some of the trouble comes from a state of uncertainty, which (in my view) has been exacerbated by our state government. We are often reminded that there will be no money coming from “the state.”

There seems to be a fear of the future at South Adams. We have heard that the school system will go bankrupt. We have been told how bad the financial future looks for South Adams Schools. We are told repeatedly that there will be no money coming from the state, which has impacted our contract talks.

I am confident that you have the best interests for all of Indiana. I know that you make no decision cavalierly. I respect that you work unselfishly to improve things for your constituents. I also understand that South Adams school district is only a small part of your total concern. Nevertheless, what you do has impacted South Adams Schools.

As one of the leaders of our state, I do believe that you have some culpability in creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, which has impacted our small part of Indiana. This letter does not put the blame on you for all of our contract woes. That is not its intent. The intent of this letter is to encourage you to continue to work toward a stable financial future for the State of Indiana.

Berne, South Adams teacher

Supports Paul

To the editor:

Service. It’s an attribute that many like to claim, yet so few earn the right through their actions. When I think of State Senator Allen Paul, I think of the term that suits him best. Service.

As a veteran, I have a special place in my heart for those who avoided the lure of self-interest and privilege and served their country, as Sergeant Paul did in Viet Nam. I urge every veteran to support this combat vet, not for what he says he stands for, but for what he gave when it counted.

Service.

As a graduate of one of this area’s greatest resources, Indiana University East, I saw how Senator Paul worked with fellow legislators, regardless of politics, and successfully fought for my school as well as Ivy Tech’s regional campus.

A strict partisan would not have earned the respect and trust to forge the efforts that have seen IU East and Ivy Tech grow dramatically as a direct result of Paul’s experience.

As a taxpayers and worker, I know that Alan Paul has slogged and sweat with those from every race and class. A successful businessman, he knows that economic development should not come at the expense of those who toil and simply wish to be paid a fair wage. His opponent unashamedly believes that those seeking a living wage for their families hamper progress. Senator Paul knows better and has stood his ground against tougher likes than a few business elites. He has demonstrated that he can represent the best interests of an entire district, not just the selfish.

I urge voters on Tuesday to stand up for a man who may be counted among the few who have earned a reputation for what this election should really be about.

Service.

Mark Thomas
