Left with a loss for words

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

On a beautiful, sunny typical morning in downtown Los Angeles last week, I was amused at the locals who were wearing heavy coats and complaining about a 50 degree start to another lovely southern California day. Nice problem to have, considering what we have at home in East Central Indiana, this time of year.

As my phone beeped and I picked it up, I was instantly brought to reality of what real problems are. A very close friend needed help with finding information for a gravesite and the related fees with opening and closing of a grave for his 24 year old daughter. I willingly found out and forwarded the information to him.

During the all too long return trip home, I reflected on our friendship over the past 20-plus years and realized how enriching it has been to me.

I knew all along that this day would come for him, and always accepted it as part of the cost of having such a good and dear friend. The pain I felt for him from well over 2,000 miles away was actually a palpable, physical presence within me for the entire return trip.

His daughter was such a lovely, vibrant, cute, kooky, smart and entirely beautiful little waif of a girl who I had the reward of knowing for her all-too-brief tenure here on this mortal coil. For once in this writer and public speaker's life, I am simply at a loss for words of what to say to her daddy, who is my friend, that doesn't sound cliché and lame at a time like this. Rest in eternal peace our young and precious girl; you will be remembered forever in my heart.

Sincerely,

James D. Fulks III
