Legislature made mistake allowing big-time gambling (06/29/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

It was a frustration to me, reading about the huge plans being made to build large facilities that will house thousands of slot machines.

It was a sad day when Indiana politicians implemented laws forcing local clubs to remove gambling machines, with the intention of driving their customers to the big-time gambling establishments.

These are clubs that put a lot of their profit back into communities.

These clubs supported local charities, children's homes, the cancer society, as well as purchasing flags for our American soldiers and numerous other things.

This move has forced the closure of many Eagles, Amvets and Moose clubs, as well as many posts of The American Legion. The American Legions all represent thousands of veterans of the United States of America.

Thousands of these veterans gave their very lives so that we have freedom, and our lawmakers are using that freedom to destroy whatever they choose.

It is time for all the residents of Indiana to stop and think before they cast their ballots in our upcoming elections.

It is time we choose and support politicians that protect our privilege of freedom instead of destroying it.

Hunger fight

To the editor:

The committee of the Jayland Chicken Dinner to Benefit the Fight Against Local and World Hunger would like to thank the public for their tremendous response.

There were 945 dinners sold, and with the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans match we were able to split $4,000 between the Helping Hands Food Bank and World Hunger.

We would like to thank John and Janice Fisher for the delicious dinners prepared; Pizza Hut for sponsoring the tickets and coupons; and Immaculate Conception Rosary Society for underwriting the cost of advertising.

Also thanks to these special churches, organizations and individuals for their extra efforts: Bryant Wesleyan, Angelan Bancise, Community and Family Services, Kay Strausburg, Immaculate Conception, Karen Wolford, New Corydon Methodist, Eugene Lehman, Redeemer Lutheran, Carol Elzey, The Rock, Nancy Culy, Trinity Catholic, Jane Martin, Arleen Miller, Union Chapel, Terry Rigby, West Walnut Street Church of Christ, Ethelyn Glentzer, Westchester United Methodist, Sally Starr, Zion Lutheran Church, Meg Habegger and WPGW radio for their publicity of the event.

Please mark your calendar for the April 20, 2008 dinner. Our goal is to sell 1,000 meals.

If your church or organization would like to be involved, call Redeemer Lutheran Church at (260) 997-6787.

Sincerely,

Carol Elzey, Janice Fisher, Meg Habegger and Karen Wolford[[In-content Ad]]
