Lehman, Cope lead area runners
Collegiate Check-up
Seven former Patriots and Starfires converged on a pair of track meets Saturday, with Tim Lehman and Dylan Cope leading the way.
Lehman, a 2012 South Adams High School graduate, won one event and contributed to a pair of runner-up relays for the Goshen College men’s team at the Anderson Outdoor Invitational, and Cope (Jay County – 2013) earned a win for the Indiana University East men.
Meanwhile, Eme Miller (Jay County – 2012) was the top performer at the Huntington Invitational with a second-place finish for the Defiance College women.
Lehman dominated his only individual event at Anderson, outpacing the field by more than two seconds in the 400-meter dash. He posted a winning time of 52.03 seconds for the Maple Leafs, who were second out of five teams.
The sophomore teamed with Joe Pepala, Kyler Lehman and Campos Vinicius for a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay in 45.64, and joined Daniel Zelaya, Lucas Harnish and Campos for second in the 4x400 relay in 3 minutes, 30.47 seconds.
Cope shattered the Red Wolves’ 1,500 run record he set March 22 at the Wabash College Relays, winning the event by nearly two seconds. He broke his previous mark of 4:19 as he crossed the finish line in 4:16.69.
He was also eighth in 2:08.55 in the 800 run for IU East, which finished in fifth place.
Alli Beitler (South Adams – 2010) was fifth for the runner-up Goshen women in the 5,000 run in 20:31.76.
Miller’s runner-up finish for the third-place Yellowjackets came in the 3,200-meter steeplechase at Huntington, where Hannah Moore (South Adams – 2012), Katie Snyder (Jay County – 2013) and Megan Taylor (Jay County – 2011) were also in action. She finished in 11:43.79, holding off Trinity Christian’s Jessica Diseelkoen for second place.
Moore helped the host Forester women’s team to a fifth-place finish. She was eighth in the 5,000 run in 18:59.24.
Snyder joined with Indiana Wesleyan University teammates Christy Schultz, Melvin Corrine and Michaela Mertz to take second place in the 4x100 relay in 50.68 seconds.
She was also 13th in the 100 dash in 13.6 and 17th in the 200 dash in 27.88 for the first-place Wildcats.
Taylor and Manchester University teammates Sarah Stahl, Brittany Shuler and Kasey Reneau posted a time of 4:47.54 in the 4x400 relay.
She was 14th for the seventh-place Spartans in 1:14.81 in the 400 dash.[[In-content Ad]]
