South Adams School Board

BERNE - A new science teacher nearly upstaged a new principal at South Adams High School Tuesday night.

Board members unanimously approved the hiring of South Adams alum Trent Lehman as the high school's new principal, succeeding Nick Eccles who is now superintendent of North White Schools.

But a more unusual move came when Myron Schwartz stepped down from the school board to take a classroom assignment.

"We're losing a board member but gaining a new science teacher," said board president Tony Mellencamp.

Schwartz, who has a technical background in manufacturing, will assume his teaching duties Aug. 12.

Anyone interested in serving out the last year of his term should submit a cover letter and resume to the district office by July 31. Applicants must reside within the city limits of Berne.

Lehman has been principal of Blackhawk Christian Schools, Fort Wayne, since 2008. Prior to that he was assistant principal at Norwell High School.

He received his bachelor's degree in biology and secondary education from Grace College in 1994, his master's in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1998 and his school administration endorsement from Indiana University in 2003.

While in high school at South Adams, he was the Starfires' all-time leading scorer in basketball.

In other business, the board:

•Authorized Performance Services to gather price quotes for phase two work in renovations at the high school, primarily involving the weight room, wrestling room and several offices.

•Authorized Performance Services to gather price quotes for both labor and materials for a number of landscaping projects that can be phased in over time. Student groups, community groups, and Eagle Scout candidate Alex Kistler have expressed interest in taking on various aspects of the landscaping. "It's just been a real great opportunity for the community, said superintendent Cathy Egolf.

•Hired J.D. Keller as technical integration specialist.

•Tabled a proposal by board member John Mann to provide modest financial compensation to the board president in recognition of the amount of time involved in the job.

•Approved book rentals and fees for the coming school year. Those will be posted to the school corporation's web site.

•Agreed to place public notice advertising in just one Adams County newspaper, The Berne Tri-Weekly, in the year ahead.

•Approved the elementary student handbook for the new school year.[[In-content Ad]]
