Let's help put Jay County on the map (08/22/2008)
Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
What a lovely column in the CR by Diana Dolecki Monday, Aug. 18. This was the one about seeing ourselves as our visitors see us, especially when so many visitors are here for the annual Engine and Tractor Show. This county truly is a special place.
Those of you who have lived here your whole lives may not have much to compare it to. Those of you who have moved here but don't participate in what's going on don't know the real Jay County.
Those of us who moved away, then moved back, can assure you what an exceptional county this is.
Which brings us to something else we read in the CR (can you tell we read it cover to cover...thanks, Jack!). The letter to the editor from Roy Leverich last Saturday encouraged the Jay County Visitors and Tourism Bureau to use Jay County's renowned natives to boost our reputation with the many visitors and potential visitors to Jay County.
We thought this was a great idea, since the latest Illinois, Indiana & Ohio AAA TourBook doesn't even show Portland on the map (page 116) or list it in "Points of Interest." To see the current state of affairs, we checked out the Visitors and Tourism Bureau's website where many people interested in Jay County would likely visit (visitjaycounty.com).
Oh, dear. We said things were special here, not perfect. The only "headline" on the front page of the Web site is for the Fiber Fest of March 2008. What about the current Engine and Tractor Show and Welcome Home Festival? Granted, there is some mention in the fine print of the U.S. 27 brochure you can click on.
But don't these deserve top billing on the front page along with the Dunkirk Glass Days, Jay County Fair, Vintage Motorbike Show, Bryant Loblolly Days, the County Heritage Festival, Pennville Fall Jubilee, and the Christmas WinterFest, just to mention a few? We won't even go into the misspellings, other out-of-date material, and links that go nowhere.
Our future relies on using all available tools to let the world know what exciting and fun things are going on here. Let's clean up and update the website of the Jay County Visitors and Tourism Bureau, and please, JCVTB, see what it takes to get our description in the AAA book.
That would put us on the map!
