Let's keep downtown blooming all summer (05/20/06)

Editorial

They belong to you.

They belong to all of us.

And it’s up to us to make sure they flourish through the weeks and months ahead.

Members of Plant, Hoe and Hope Garden Club planted a mix of petunias and geraniums in 69 containers throughout downtown Portland this week.

They grace the Jay County Courthouse, and they provide a spectacular welcome to the downtown business district by accenting the concrete bowstring truss bridge over the Salamonie River on South Meridian Street. They brighten the appearance of dozens of downtown businesses.

The garden club’s enthusiastic volunteers have done their part.

The rest is up to us — the community — to make sure all that effort hasn’t been in vain.

There’s watering to be done, but the biggest threat facing beautification efforts like this is vandalism. It always has been, and it probably always will be.

What can you do about it?

Two things:

• Keep an eye on things as if they belonged to you, because they are, in fact, yours. They belong to all of us. That means reporting vandals when you spot them, and it means speaking out when you witness bad behavior.

• Take time to talk with your children or grandchildren about the importance of respect for other people’s property. Like it or not, vandalism is a youth-oriented crime. It’s something that’s outgrown over time, but it can be prevented with a little counsel from parents, mentors, and role models. Kids want to do the right thing, but they need our help knowing what’s right and what’s wrong.

Do those two things, and you’ll be able to do a third as well: Enjoy the flowers and bask in the civic pride they symbolize. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
