Jay County High School seniors Austin Flynn and Sara Garringer have been friends since before they attended kindergarten together at Redkey Elementary School.
On Thursday, the two were named the Portland Foundation's 2007 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.
While waiting for Flynn and Garringer to be called to the JCHS office Thursday afternoon, their parents, Fred and Nancy Garringer and Stephen and Carlotta Flynn, reminisced about their children when they were younger playing in the Garringer's backyard on a Slip n' Slide.
They also joked about wishing that they could have picked out what their children wore to school today. Austin wore a T-shirt that read 'hard work never killed anybody but why take a chance,' his father said. Sara was in her track warm ups, her mother added.
When the two top-ranked students in their class strolled into the office, they immediately were congratulated and hugged by their parents, many of them wiping away tears of joy.
Garringer plans to major in education at either Hanover College or Indiana University.
She is ranked number one in her class with a 4.046 cumulative GPA. Participating in National Honor Society, she is also a member of the Junior Classical League, First National Bank student board, Jay Today staff and band.
