Link taking over as Thunder rebounding leader (01/03/04)

Collegiate check-up

Kristina Link has really started to show off her skills.

Link, a 2003 Jay County graduate, recently took over a starting role for the Tri-State Thunder women’s basketball team. She has started each of the last five games, and has been the team’s rebounding leader in four of the last six, including an 11-rebound effort against Adrian College a few weeks ago.

The freshman matched teammate Nikki Bergman with a team-best seven rebounds in Tri-State’s most recent game, a loss to Spring Arbor. She also had six points on 2-of-3 shooting, one assist and a pair of blocked shots.

Link had two points, five rebounds and a steal Dec. 20 against South Dakota Tech, and three points, eight rebounds and a steal a day earlier against Mt. Marty College.

Link has now started five games, and is second on the team in rebounds with an average of 6.2 per contest for the Thunder (1-10). She is shooting 43 percent from the field and has seven assists and five blocks.

Boyles shooting well

South Adams graduate Brad Boyles continues to be a machine when it comes to putting the ball in the basket.

Boyles had his best recent game as he hit 8-of-11 field goal attempts for 19 points in the Bluffton Beavers men’s basketball team’s 76-71 win over Lake Erie Dec. 29. He is one of the best field goal percentage shooters in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

He added six rebounds, one assist and one steal against Lake Erie.

Boyles reached double figures again a night later with 12 points in a loss to Goshen (16-1). He had three assists and two steals in the contest as well.

The senior also poured in 18 points, including and 8-of-10 free throw effort, in a 73-65 win over Denison Dec. 20. He had five points and three assists in the contest.

Overall, Boyles is hitting 64 percent of his field goal attempts. That mark is easily the best on the Bluffton squad and ranks fourth in the HCAC.

He is second on the team with 15.9 points per game and also averages 3.2 rebounds per contest. He has 24 assists and eight steals on the year.

Bluffton is 6-4 on the season.

Heitkamp hits high

Sara Heitkamp hasn’t played in a while, but she made quite an impact in her last contest.

With the Capital Crusaders women’s basketball team (6-4) playing host to Otterbein Dec. 20, Heitkamp hit for a season-high 22 points in a 74-70 victory. She ended the contest in dramatic fashion, stealing the ball with just three seconds remaining on the clock.

Heitkamp was 6-of-12 from the field in the victory, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. She also hit 7-of-9 free throw attempts.

The sophomore also had her second double-double in three games as she came away with 10 rebounds. She added three assists and one steal.

In her second season, Heitkamp has become the Crusaders’ leader. She tops the team in scoring (14.5 points per game), assists (38) and steals (44). She is second on the team with 6.4 rebounds per contest.

Her numbers also fare well conference wide as she tops the Ohio Athletic Conference is steals. She is fourth in assists and seventh in scoring.[[In-content Ad]]
