Local center was caring (04/05/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

My mother lived at Heritage Commons on West Votaw Street for 13 months. This is a wonderful assisted living facility. The staff is outstanding in the way they care for the residents and each other.

Deb Tipton, the director, not only helped me deal with my mother's progressing illness, she helped me extensively in the pursuit of benefits that were available to my mother.

I was in Portland three or four days each month to stay with mom and make sure she was comfortable. While I was there, the staff and the residents became very good friends to me, as well.

I live in Kentucky, and when I was not in Portland, Deb kept me totally informed of my mother's moods, appetite, sleeping habits, etc., and that is real piece of mind.

Thousands of people already know, and many of us "boomers" are finding out, that it is not easy to take your parents out of their homes and put them in the care of others. Portland has a superior assisted living facility, and that can only happen from the hard work that everyone in the building puts forward.

Deb Tipton and the Crown Point group are thinking ahead to the next generation of assisted living, and the improvements or upgrades that will take care of the coming multitudes of Baby Boomers. The 13 months that my mother stayed there, I felt that she was safely and expertly taken care of, and, most of all, very happy.

Thank you Heritage Commons for taking such good care of my mother and me. There are others that helped me in so many ways. I thank you all, as well.

Revival thanks

To the editor:

We wish to thank all the churches which came out to our revival. Some of the churches canceled their own Sunday and Wednesday evening services to attend. It was one of the most spirit-filled revivals we have ever experienced.

Thanks to EMC and the Rev. Steve Arnold, Walnut Corner Rev. Steve Rodgers, Faith Evangelical Rev. John Moyer, Redkey Nazarene Rev. Phil Dorries, Gospel Lighthouse Rev. Ruth Funk, and Muncie Evangelistic Rev. Kenneth Cooper, along with Union Chapel, Portland Friends and Christian Retreat Center.

Special thanks to Rev. H.R. Burkett and Rev. Claude Creel and The Christianaires. Thanks to The Commercial Review, PG-14 radio and all the businesses who allowed us to post our flyers.

God bless you all.

The Rev. Herbert and Margaret Hummel, for the congregation of Hopewell of Life Ministries

Worth reading

To the editor:

The article printed (on page 5) in The Commercial Review Wednesday, March 28, regarding North Carolina banning pork buildings 10 years ago is well worth the time to read. We hope enough Jay County taxpayers take the paper and have time to read this.

Read the whole thing, because we are highlighting the main things concerning Jay County. "In the 10 years, environmentalists have tallied damage to rivers and land, and neighbors have complained about the overpowering stench. The water is typically flushed from barns into open air lagoons." Here, it can be placed on the fields and can sit, we believe 24 hours, if the weather cooperates. Then it is worked into the ground.

We are concerned that people with shallow wells will be in trouble in the future.

Jay County roads are taking a beating because of the large equipment being used to build the CAFOs, then the hauling process. Call the commissioners and county council members. Tell them not to allow tax abatements to the owners of these operations. This takes away from the upkeep of the roads.
