Local gas prices questioned (2/17/05)

By To the editor:-
Is it just me, or are the residents of Portland being taken in by the gas companies?
I visited Bluffton (last) weekend and you could purchase unleaded gasoline for $1.73 a gallon. In Berne, gas is usually at least 10 cents per gallon cheaper than here. Muncie is always at least 10 cents cheaper, and St. Henry, Ohio, is always 10 to 15 cents cheaper. Decatur is cheaper, as well.
How come when a so-called crisis takes place, Portland companies are the first to raise their prices and the last to lower their prices? I notice when Portland has a special event, such as the tractor and engine show, up goes the price of gas here.
I don’t know about all the other citizens, but I purchase all my gas out of town, if possible. If all the surrounding areas have lower prices, then I would say, fellow citizens, there certainly is some price-gouging going on. Another good example why residents do their shopping outside city limits.
Come on people, we’re tired of being taken. Be competitive, keep our business local.
