Local organizations asking for help (03/20/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The Jayland Homeless Shelter faces an immediate financial crisis. For several years the shelter has been operated on minimum funds provided through the charity of United Way and a host of local churches and individuals.

The Portland Foundation has supported shelter improvements. As this winter comes to an end, the directors have confronted unexpected financial problems.

Equipment failure, a new water heater among others, were a problem. However, the unexpected medical needs of our uninsured management, and our decision to assure hospital and medical care, were the most serious blow to our budget. It has left us in immediate need of your charitable help.

Please help us maintain this program with your gift of money to the Jayland Homeless Shelter, P.O. Box 1023, Portland, IN, 47371.

If you would like to tour the shelter or attend our board meetings, please call any of the board members listed below.

Bob Read, chairman, for board members Jim Brewster, Mike Brewster, Tracy Cline, Virginia Cline, Don Cole, Neil Habegger, Todd Penrod and Martha Read

Help needed

To the editor:

Jay County Habitat for Humanity Inc. has built 10 houses over the past 10 years to provide homes for families that might not ever get the opportunity to own their own home. There are four in Portland, three in Dunkirk, two in Pennville and one in Redkey. We also tithe back to the Habitat for Humanity organization and dedicate those monies to Honduras which has been used to provided 40 more homes there for first-time homeowners.

Our goal is to one day build enough homes to be self-sufficient without the need of contributions. However, to date we are falling short and may not be able to build this year.

Our funds come from the cost of the homes charged to the families (without interest) over several years, and contributions from local supporters and many corporate sponsors in appliances, building materials and discounts on various items for the homes.

Soon, our requests for support will be going out and we would like everyone to consider Habitat for Humanity. We were very grateful for the $12,000 we received last year, but it fell short and we were forced to borrow to pay off last year's home for the first time since our beginning in 1997.

These homes all have economic value to our communities, and make a great way to serve our neighbors - a true local mission work in progress.

If you would like a presentation for your church or organization, please call (260) 726-8391 and set up a date and time.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Jeb Bubp, for the board of directors of Jay County Habitat for Humanity Inc.[[In-content Ad]]
