Local pastor calls for revival (03/21/08)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Last May (2007), the Spirit of the Lord spoke and woke me up early in the morning. What He had to say for the next two hours was simply astonishing and challenging.

The Lord said He was going to pour out His spirit upon "the geographical area" beginning this year. By "this geographical area" I believe He meant Jay County. The prophet Joel prophesized (2:28-29) that the Lord would "pour out His spirit upon all flesh in the last days. (Acts 2:17).

In many places right now upon the earth, great revivals are breaking out and thousands of souls are repenting and being saved. In one town, it was reported that the Spirit of God "brooded" over the entire town and His presence affected every church and every person.

Evangelist Tommy Tenney predicted that when this revival began in America, it would start at the "old wells," where the Lord had already moved in power and glory.

Last May, the Spirit said it is time for the "last days outpouring" and it was His will and desire to move mightily. If we follow the formula of 2 Chronicles 7:14, we are on the verge of seeing another mighty revival right before our eyes. It will affect every pastor and every church that will repent and turn from their luke-warmness and once again allow the Holy Spirit to have His way in their lives.

Somehow, in these last days before the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, the area churches need to recognize their coldness and formality and get God back in their church. "Judgment must begin at the house of God."

There are now only a few people left who witnessed the great revivals in Portland in the late 1920s through the 1930s and even into the 1940s. Think of it! A revival that lasted for almost 20 years. Thousands of souls were healed, saved and delivered from sin. The news spread, and was documented by our local newspaper, that God was moving.

When the revival started in 1929, the popular Billy Sunday was speaking in Portland, and many churches were experiencing many healings and conversions. The revival went from a humble tent meeting to the East Main Street Christian Church. The evangelist was the Rev. Charles A. Fisher and his son, Lee Fisher.

Many local pastors joined in baptizing the new converts with more than 2,000 people looking on. Wave after wave of glory penetrated into the people of this area as the message of the cross was simply preached.

My parents witnessed this continuing revival after it outgrew the East Main Street church and then the Portland Armory. At the request of the people, the Fishers built the Gospel Tabernacle on East Race Street, only to see it too small for the crowds.

As one convert gave her testimony of a personal relationship with Jesus, the local newspaper reported that the police had to help direct the crowds, as between 700 and 1,000 people jammed inside the church and another 1,000 listened by loudspeakers outside. Many times revivals broke out and lasted for weeks. At least one went on for 10 months. A local mortician told me how he used to drive his ambulance to the doors of the Tabernacle, wheel the sick on his cots inside the revival service, and the sick would immediately get healed and shout all over the church.

It's been a while since Jay County has seen something that crossed denominational lines and lasted more than a weekend.

God desires Jay County to be in "revival mode." A promise is that if we repent and turn from our wicked ways, that we will hear from heaven.

Is there one minister, one pastor, one congregation that is sick and tired of the status quo and will lead this county back to revival? Are there any saints in this area who can reach God and pray down the glory once again?

We have a spoken promise that He is here now, waiting for that spark that will ignite the spontaneity of His Holy presence. It doesn't matter who He spoke to. It should've been all of us. But since He woke me at 3 a.m., it's only fair that He wake you up now. This, fellow Christians, is your wake-up call.

It's time to mind God. It's time for hundreds of people to get back to Church and get right with God. It's time for a countywide revival. He wants to continue where He left off.

Is anybody hungry? Is anybody thirsty?

Sincerely,

Pastor Phill Jellison
