Jay County’s robots will be strutting their stuff Saturday at Minnetrista.
Five students from the Jay County High School robotics program, six alumni of that program who are now in college and SDP Manufacturing’s EZ Hauler will be featured in conjunction with “Robots: The Interactive Exhibition,” a 5,000-square-foot multimedia exhibit at the museum facility in Muncie.
“We want to be able to interact with the public,” robotics teacher Doug Tipton said Thursday. Some operational robots will be taken, including a “speed racer” and a “scorpion tank.”
“The speed racer’s going to be great,” said Tipton.
“We’re probably going to take some pieces as well” so visitors to Minnetrista can get some idea how the JCHS robots are designed and constructed, he added.
The Jay County group will be on hand from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., doing demonstrations and answering questions about the robots they’ve created.
Tipton said robotics teams from Muncie and Anderson will also be taking part, showing their first robots.
Jay County’s program has drawn state and national attention and scored highly in a number of robotics competitions. It was launched in 2008.
SDP Manufacturing, based in Dunkirk, builds the EZ Hauler, which makes use of robotic technology to handle difficult utility pole work in tight spaces.
JCHS robotics students taking part Saturday include Caleb Hummel, Zach Landers, Austin Wendel, Caleb Baldwin and Tyler Wendel.
Veterans of the JCHS program now attending Purdue University, Miami of Ohio, Ball State University and Ivy Tech include Derek Hughes, Aaron Hudson, Mike Miller, Josh Mills, Sam Miller and Aaron Thomas.
Admission to the museum facilities is $5 for those who are not members.
Minnetrista is also showcasing “Dig Set Spike,” an exhibit chronicling the regional history of volleyball.
Minnetrista is located on the White River in Muncie and includes 40 acres of gardens and grounds in addition to a museum facility, one of the historic Ball family homes, and a nature area.
The JCHS robotics team will also be doing a demonstration at Loblolly Days in Bryant on Sept. 10 and at the Jay County Historical Society’s Heritage Festival Oct. 1.[[In-content Ad]]
