Local spikers make mark during season's first week (09/11/04)

Three local volleyball players wasted no time in showing off their skills this season.

It took Joscie Kaup just a few points to become the talk of “The Daily Orange.” Sara Hough needed just one match to become a leader of her first-year program. And Libby Michael spent her first week dominating the conference.

Kaup, a Fort Recovery graduate, quickly showed why the Syracuse Orangemen were right to take a chance on a 5-foot-6 player.

The shortest player on the team by three inches, Kaup served nine straight points early in the first game of the first match, leading Syracuse to a 30-18, 30-20, 30-25 victory over Buffalo. She was the feature athlete in the next day’s coverage in “The Daily Orange.”

“I just tried to go out there and get the nerves out,” the freshman libero told the college’s student newspaper. “When you go out on the court, it’s just like home and it’s just like practice. You need to ignore the crowd and just stay excited. Hopefully we can do this all season.”

Ancilla College, which is in its first year of volleyball, went 1-3 in a season opening tournament at the College of DuPage, but got a great effort from Hough. The 2004 Jay County graduate finished the tourney with 36 digs and 18 kills.

Michael and the Anderson Ravens played five matches in their opening week, including four at the Kalamazoo Hornett Invitational. The senior and 2001 Jay County graduate was selected to the all-tournament team and went on to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week award.

Kaup finished the opening match against Buffalo with two kills, five digs and one ace. She put up her biggest numbers in Orange’s next match with 29 digs and three aces against Army.

She added 20 digs against Rhode Island and 18 versus Fairleigh Dickinson as Syracuse ran its record to 4-0 on the season.

Hough went on to lead the Ancilla (6-3) attack with 19 kills in a head-to-head match with the College of DuPage. She was second on the team in the match with 12 digs.

She played more solid defense against Kankakee Community College with 41 digs to go along with four aces before bringing back great attacking numbers against IU Northwest. She was second on the team with nine kills in that match, recording an incredible .421 attack percentage.

Michael came away with 169 digs and five aces in four matches in the Kalamazoo tournament. She finished the first week with 205 digs and seven aces to win the HCAC award.

She also had 46 kills and a pair of aces in Tuesday’s 30-20, 28-30, 30-12, 30-23 Raven victory over Earlham.

Former Jay County player Jenni Little also turned in a solid effort to start the season for Anderson (4-1).

Little had 26 kills in the first five matches including 10 against Miliken at Kalamazoo. She has also picked up six digs, four blocks and four assists.

Scott Steiner

Centre College got to the end zone a few times, but the 2001 South Adams graduate didn’t make it easy on the Colonels.

Steiner, a senior, led Bluffton College in tackles as it won its season opener for the second straight year by a 33-24 score over Centre.

Steiner attacked the Colonels, finishing with a team-high 11 tackles (four solo, seven assisted). He also had an interception in the victory.

Steph Welch

The 2002 South Adams graduate turned in the top finish for the Bluffton College women’s cross country team at the Tiffin Invitational Sept. 3. She placed 44th in the 4K race.

Cameron Hummel

The only quarterback to lead Jay County to a winning season in the last 15 years suffered an injury and didn’t play much in the second half of his Rose-Hulman Engineers’ 16-12 victory over Earlham.

Hummel, a 2003 graduate of JCHS, completed 3-of-15 passes for 61 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter. He carried the ball six times for 31 yards.

Kim Abbott

The 2002 Jay County graduate turned in a couple of solid efforts as the University of Indianapolis women’s golf team got its season under way.

Abbott turned in her best round on the second day of the Ferris State Bulldog Fall Invitational, where the Greyhounds finished 12th in a 19-team field. She finished the second round with a 92, combining with a first-round 95 for a total of 187.

The junior also shot rounds of 99 and 98 for a 197 as U of I finished ninth out of 17 teams at the Grand Valley State Laker Fall Classic this week.[[In-content Ad]]
