WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dreams about floating in space helped inspire a Judge Haynes Elementary School student who has been named one of 50 honorable mention winners in the 19th annual Reading Is Fundamental National Poster Contest.

The poster entered by Anna Burbage, 12, was selected as one of the 53 best out of the more than 500 national entries in the competition themed “Read to Imagine.”

The contest was a back-to-school reading-motivation competition developed by RIF and sponsored by Nestlé USA.

Her poster shows an astronaut floating in space far above the Earth.

“When I go to sleep, I dream of being in space and floating around. And I wanted to show that to people,” Burbage said Friday evening.

Using paint and markers, Burbage worked on the poster during several of her art classes at school. She was very pleased with her effort. “It’s pretty,” she said.

“Her poster was excellent,” Kathy Ayers, who teaches art at Judge Haynes and East Elementary schools, said Friday evening.

“I was so happy with her work. She’s very talented.”

Burbage, a sixth grader, is the daughter of Russell and Yuko Burbage of Portland. She said she thought her father was kidding when he told her Friday evening that her poster had received an honorable mention in the contest — the first she had ever entered.

“This poster contest provides an artistic outlet for children to express their love of books and reading” Carol H. Rasco, RIF president and chief executive officer, said in an e-mailed press release. “My sincere congratulations go to Anna and to the families, teachers, and RIF volunteers who contribute every day to the education and achievements of the children of Indiana.”

In December, eight independent judges selected Burbage’s poster as one of 50 honorable mention winners. The judges also selected a national contest winner and two runners-up. All 53 of the winning posters will be displayed in the RIF Reading Planet on the Internet at www.rif.org.

In addition, the artwork will be viewed by thousands of visitors to the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, D.C. this summer.

As an honorable mention winner, Burbage will receive a certificate of honor and a gift certificate to purchase books.

Burbage, who wants to be a veterinarian some day, said she likes to read books “about animals, mostly about dogs.” But as to what books she’ll get with her gift certificate, she said, “I’ve got to think about that.”

Her RIF site also will receive a gift certificate to purchase books.

The 2004 national contest winner was Rebecca Galloway of Warwick, Rhode Island. First runner-up was Letaisia Thompson of Orlando, Fla., and Hayden Hansco of Marco Island, Fla. was second runner-up.[[In-content Ad]]
