Longer school days to continue
The extended school day is getting an extension.
Superintendent Tim Long announced this morning that Jay School Corporation will continue extending school days by one hour through May 9.
Jay Schools have been in session for an extra hour each day since March 3 in an effort to make up days after having 16 weather-related cancellations this year. The original plan called for days to be extended through April 8, with Long given the option continue the extension if necessary.
“I surveyed the staff and the employees to check on what the impact has been I think it’s doing what it was intended to do,” said Long. “Most of the feedback I’ve had has been really good.
“This has been a good solution I think for the kids and for the community. I think we’re heading in the right direction with it.”
The more than two months of longer school days will allow Jay Schools to make up about half the days it missed because of the harsh winter. The Indiana Department of Education requires six hour of additional classroom time to make one lost day for middle and high school, and five hours for elementary schools.
The extended day may have an effect on Jay County High School spring sporting events, which are generally scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Athletics director Steve Boozier said this morning an effort will be made to start all events as scheduled, with changes made on a case-by-case basis if necessary.[[In-content Ad]]
