Longtime board member resigns

Fort Recovery School Board

FORT RECOVERY — Members of the Fort Recovery School Board say the past 15 years have been a time of continuous improvement.
Dan Kahlig has been there for all of it.
Almost fifteen years after joining the school board, Kahlig, 2283 Watkins Road, Ft. Recovery, has decided to step down. His final meeting was Tuesday evening.
“It’s just a good time for me [to resign],” Kahlig said, citing his busy schedule as the main factor.
Family obligations, including his daughter Kylie’s recent acceptance to the University of Northwestern Ohio and her participation on the school’s basketball team, are a big part of why Kahlig, a 1976 graduate of Fort Recovery High School, believes he would be unable to focus as much of his attention as he would like to on the school board.
“I never want to give less than 100 percent,” he said. “(The community) deserves a board member who gives 100 percent.”
Pride for the schools and the community was a big reason Kahlig ran for school board for the first time back in 1998. He said he ran because he believes good education is important in everyone’s life and he wanted to help make sure that the children in Fort Recovery got that education.
“I just wanted to help the kids, and the school district, to continue their excellence,” he said. “I got a good education at Fort Recovery. I wanted that education to continue for my kids, and for everyone’s kids.”
As Kahlig’s time on the board continued, he said the struggles with state funding have made it harder to insure that students get the good education they deserve.
“State funding has gotten perilous,” he said. “There have been reductions in almost everything over the years.”
Nonetheless, Kahlig is still proud of his time on the board, mentioning his involvement in numerous projects, including the construction of the new elementary/middle school, which was finished for the 2000-2001 school year, and the myriad programs and workshops for improving teachers that the board helped to generate.
“We’ve just been blessed with having great students, great parents, and high quality teachers,” he said.[[In-content Ad]]
