The Indians suffered their fifth straight loss Thursday. But in the final four innings they showed offensive life for the first time in a week.

All of the Fort Recovery High School softball team's six hits came in the last three innings, but their comeback attempt fell short in a 5-3 loss to the visiting Fort Loramie Redskins.

"That was very nice to see," said Marie Osterholt of the late offense. "It wasn't just little dribblers. They made some good solid contact, and we haven't done that in a while.

"We scored a couple runs. We've just got to continue that in the next game ..."

Osterholt said she feels her team has lost a bit of the confidence it showed at the beginning of the season. She said she hopes they can gain that back as they head into Monday's Midwest Athletic Conference finale against New Bremen and then the sectional championship game Tuesday at Elida.

"(They weren't) hitting and (that carries over to the field)," she noted. "They give up a run and they feel like they can't get it back. But they can. They've got to know that they can.

"They get down on themselves and they can't. They've got to know that they're a good team and just keep battling through.

"I want them to play strong, if a mistake happens, it's done. They've got to forget the past. ... The game isn't over. It's seven innings. That's what I want them to work on."

Fort Recovery (10-12) made a run at a comeback against the Redskins, scoring once on three errors in the fourth inning after falling behind 5-0.

Olivia Thien scored on an RBI single to right field by Josie Guggenbiller in the sixth, and Carly Staugler scored on an RBI single to center from Kendra Brunswick in the seventh. But with Tribe runners on first and second in the final frame, Fort Loramie's Denise Marshall induced a pop-up to end the game.

The Indians left runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings, including a pair on second and third in the sixth.

"It seems to take us four, five six innings before they start getting onto the pitcher," said Osterholt, who got a single, a run and an RBI from Brunswick. "We've got to make contact sooner."

Staugler and Thien each had a hit and a run, and Guggenbiller had the single and RBI in the sixth inning.

Mallory Barhorst earned the win for Fort Loramie, giving up just an unearned run while striking out three batters in four innings of work. Marshall gave up two runs on six hits.

"Our two pitchers, Denise Marshall and Mallory Barhorst, we've really found something that works well with that combination," said Fort Loramie coach Brad Turner. "Each one of them takes a turn starting the game and then the other one comes in. Neither one of them is an overpowering pitcher, they just come in and (throw strikes)."

The Redskins (12-8) hit the ball hard early, with Macey Turner smacking a single to center field in the first inning and Jill Barhorst following with an RBI double to left-center. Tessa Benanzer and Macey Turner each singled and scored in the third inning, and then Fort Loramie played some small ball to pick up two runs in the fourth.

Katelyn Turner walked to lead off the fourth for the Redskins, and Allison Zimmerman added a one-out walk. Katie Holthaus came through with a sacrifice bunt, and then both Katelyn Turner and Zimmerman came around to score on a Tribe error.

"We talked a lot about getting the little things done and putting the pressure on and that's a prime example," said Brad Turner. "That's two runs right there with two balls not past anybody in the infield.

"(The Indians) have some nice quality wins. They beat Houston. They beat Minster. ... We knew it was going to be a battle."

Macey Turner led Fort Loramie with two hits and two runs, and Zimmerman finished 2-for-3 with a run.

FORT LORAMIE, Ohio - The Indians gave up a 3-0 lead as they fell 7-4 to Fort Loramie.

Becca Tobe took the loss as the Redskins scored twice in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take control. She gave up seven runs - four earned - on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

Melissa Lochtefeld led the offense for the Tribe, which scored three times in the first inning, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Kendra Stammen singled and drove in two runs, and Brittany Sudhoff had a hit, a run and an RBI.
