Lot given for park
Portland Park Board
Portland will have a sixth park.
Local residents have donated at 70x90-foot parcel of land to the city to create a small park. The land is located at the northwest corner of 10th and Bridge streets.
Christy Corle, daughter of Dick and Loretta Corle, told members of the Portland Park Board Tuesday night that her parents, along with Brian and Shelly Rippy, wanted to donate the land in an attempt to give back to the community.
The land must be used to create a small park with picnic tables and grills and must be developed by two years from the title transfer. If it is not developed by that time, the land will go back to the Corles and the Rippys.
Park board members Neil Medler, Larry Freyburgher and Sharon Bubp voted to accept the land donation. Board members Shauna Runkle and Kent McClung did not attend the meeting.
"The city thanks you very much," Medler told Christy Corle.
The city will be responsible for maintaining the park. Corle said those donating the land did not have a name for the new park.
In other business, board members learned that attendance at the Portland Pool is up from last year, but revenue is down.
Rachel McKee, pool manager, said she thinks more people have been buying season passes and coming to the pool more often. The first free swimming day at the pool was held Monday, and 222 people attended. The free Mondays are sponsored by the Portland Breakfast Optimist Club. Also, season passes are now half-price.
McKee also announced that the pool is offering swimming lessons for infants to age 3. The swimmers must be accompanied by a parent. The classes are $5 per session, or $2.50 per session for season pass holders. The classes are held from 5:20 to 6 p.m. The first class is today. Other class dates are July 10, 15, 17, 20 and 24.
Also Tuesday, Doug Blankenbaker, assistant street and park department superintendent, reported that roof replacement was recently completed on the concession stand and dugouts at Runkle-Miller Field, home of the Portland Rockets.[[In-content Ad]]
