Ludy drives in five

Collegiate Check-up

Josh Ludy continues to make the most of his opportunities.

The 2008 Jay County High School graduate made his second start of the season Tuesday, hit his second home run and reached base four times in the seventh-ranked Baylor University baseball team's 18-1 victory over Northwestern State.

Ludy's big hit came in his second at-bat and capped a 10-run third inning for the Bears (21-9). Already with an 11-0 lead, Ludy blasted a three-run home run to left-center field with teammates Dan Evatt and Ben Booker on base.

The freshman also had an RBI single earlier in the third inning, and doubled to left-center in the fifth.

He drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the first inning.

Ludy finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs.

In 16 at-bats this year, Ludy is batting .438 with six runs and eight RBIs. He has a team-best slugging percentage of 1.063, and six of his seven hits have gone for extra bases.

Jill Roughia

Jay County - 2005

Won a pair of events for the Huntington University women's track team, which won the six-team Manchester Invitational on April 4.

Roughia's first victory came in the 800-meter run, where she out-ran the field by more than four seconds to win with a time of 2-minutes, 31.01 seconds. She was also first in the 1,500 run in 5:06.74.

The senior also finished the 5,000 run in 21:03.53 to place fifth.

Holly Stein

Fort Recovery - 2007

Also competed at the Manchester Invitational, placing in the top three in all three of her events for Defiance College.

Stein was the runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 30.11 meters, finishing just a half-meter behind Huntington's Kelsey Green. She also finished second to Green in the discus with a toss of 37.17 meters.

The sophomore launched the shot put 11.29 meters for a third-place finish.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Earned victories in each of his last two outings for the Manchester College baseball team.

Atkinson dominated his last start in a 14-0 Spartans' win over Hanover, and then steadied his team in relief Wednesday as it rallied for an 18-16 victory over Bluffton.

The junior allowed just five hits April 4 in the shutout of Hanover. He struck out five batters and walked just two.

In the win Tuesday over Bluffton, Atkinson entered the game with his team trailing 16-11 after five innings. He limited the Beavers to just three hits and a walk in four innings while striking out three batters.

Atkinson leads the team in both wins (four) and ERA (2.43). He has 14 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Finished second in a pair of events to help the Hanover College men's track team to a third-place finish April 4 at the 10-team Centre Invitational.

Vormohr trailed only teammate Zach Seig in the shot put, finishing with a distance of 43 feet, 1 ½ inches. His other second-place effort came with a throw of 140 feet, 5 inches in the discus.

The sophomore was also seventh in the hammer throw at 119 feet, 2 inches.

Sarah Mescher

Jay County - 2008

Contributed to a second-place relay finish for the Anderson University women's track team, which placed fifth April 5 as it hosted the Anderson University Outdoor Invitational.

Mescher teamed with Michelle Roth, Michelle Rowlett and Rena St. Clair for a time of 52.84 in the 4x100-meter relay. They held off the team from Mount St. Joseph for second place by just two hundredths of a second.

Josh Shatto

Jay County - 2006

Left with the game tied Wednesday before the IPFW baseball team slipped to an 18-7 loss to Butler.

Shatto allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out five batters.

The junior, who is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings, also pitched in relief April 4 in a 14-8 loss to Oral Roberts. He tossed a scoreless sixth inning, allowing only a walk.

Alyssa Johnson

Jay County - 2006

Placed fifth in her only event for the Taylor University women's track team, which placed seventh April 4 in the 10-team DePauw University Outdoor Invitational.

Johnson finished less than two seconds behind runner-up Whitney Turner of Butler in the 1,500-meter run. She posted a time of 4-minutes, 46.79 seconds.

Amanda Johnson

Jay County - 2008

Also competed at the DePauw University Outdoor Invitational, earning a sixth-place finish as part of the Indiana Wesleyan women's track team's runner-up effort.

Johnson recorded a time of 2-minutes, 23.95 seconds in the 800-meter run.[[In-content Ad]]
