Ludy hits first HR (03/28/2009)

Collegiate Check-up

Once he got in the game, Josh Ludy did all he could to help eighth-ranked Baylor University baseball team avoid defeat.

The 2008 Jay County High School graduate pinch hit in the ninth inning and blasted his first career home run in the Bear's 13-8 loss Sunday to Texas Tech.

Ludy entered the game in place of designated hitter Aaron Miller in the ninth inning. He promptly launched his homer, a three-run shot, to right-center field, but Texas Tech retired the next three batters in order to finish the game.

The freshman also saw action Thursday as Baylor clobbered Texas Christian 15-4. He drew a one-out walk in the seventh inning, and played three innings defensively behind the plate.

In just seven at bats this year, Ludy is hitting .429 with a 1.143 slugging percentage. He has three hits - two doubles and the home run - three RBIs and two runs.

Jill Roughia

Jay County - 2005

Helped the Huntington University women's track team to a pair of relay wins at the J. Owen Huntsman Relays hosted by Wabash.

Roughia and teammates Krystal McHenry, Britley McConnell and Michelle Kyler dominated the 4x800-meter relay, taking the top spot by more than a minute over Marian in 10-minutes, 53.52 seconds. She also teamed with Kyler, Lauren Davenport and Josann Schoeff to win the 4x400 relay in 4:09.77.

The senior competed individually in the 3,000 steeplechase, posting a second-place time of 12:53.

Amber Edmundson

Jay County - 2008

Scored the game-tying run for the Ancilla College softball team March 13 in the first half of a double-header against Prairie State College and picked up her first collegiate win in the second.

Edmundson's Chargers trailed 3-2 in extra innings of the opening game when she reached base on an infield single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored the game-tying run a single by Amanda Thomason, and Brittany Safranek added a walk-off single one batter later.

In the second game, the freshman tossed a shutout as Ancilla rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings.

Edmundson had big offensive and defensive games again a day later as the Chargers rolled to a pair of 18-1 wins over Harper College. She had a pair of RBIs in the opening game, and earned the game-two win as she gave up just three hits while striking out four.

Holly Stein

Fort Recovery - 2007

Finished in the top five in three events as the Defiance College women's track team placed fourth our of seven as hosts of the Dick Small Invitational.

Stein's best effort came in the javelin throw, in which she finished as the runner-up at 121 feet, 8 inches. She was also fifth in the shot put at 37 feet, 9 ½ inches, and teamed for fifth wit Courtney Lantz, Kelly Neff and Kristin Goldstein with a time of 4:52.68 in the 4x400 relay.

The sophomore was also 11th at 103 feet, 3 inches in the discus.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Improved to 2-1 March 21 by pitching the Manchester College baseball team to an 11-5 victory over Rose-Hulman.

Atkinson started for the Spartans and gave up five runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four.

The junior also tossed three scoreless innings Thursday to earn the save in Manchester's 6-4 win over The University of Texas at Dallas. He gave up just one hit while walking two and striking out one.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Placed third in his lone event March 21 for the Hanover College men's track team at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird.

Vormohr tossed the discus 139 feet event to finish behind Will Summers and Wisconsin's Rory Linder.

Josh Shatto

Jay County - 2006

Pitched scoreless baseball for the IPFW men's baseball team Wednesday in its 7-6 loss to Butler.

Shatto started and shut out Butler for 2 1/3 innings before leaving the game with a 4-0 lead. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out one.

Amanda Johnson

Jay County - 2008

Finished among the top third in her lone event as the Indiana Wesleyan University women's track team competed March 20 and 21 at the Wake Forest Open.

Johnson ran the 800-meter dash, finishing 28th with a time of 2-minutes, 22.31 seconds. Ninety-four runners competed in the event.[[In-content Ad]]
