Ludy voted best in Big 12
Collegiate Check-up
Twice this year Josh Ludy was named the Big 12 Player of the Week. Now the season award is his as well.
The Big 12 coaches voted Ludy, a 2008 Jay County High School graduate, as the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year Tuesday. The Oklahoman newspaper, based in Oklahoma City, also selected him as the conference’s top player.
Ludy, a senior on the Baylor University baseball team, showed why he was deserving of the award a day later, crushing two home runs Wednesday as the third-ranked Bears topped Kansas State 11-1 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament. He hit a two-run homer to left field in the fourth and followed it up with a three-run shot to left in the fifth as he finished with six RBIs.
The catcher went 2-for-3 as Baylor fell 2-1 to Texas Saturday in its regular-season finale. He hit a home run in Friday’s 4-0 win over the Longhorns, and had a single, a double, two runs and an RBI in a 16-5 win on May 17.
Ludy leads the Big 12 in RBIs with 60 in 52 games for the Bears (43-12), and is tied for first with 11 home runs. He ranks second in slugging percentage (.594), fourth in total bases, fifth in batting average and eighth in on-base percentage.
In addition to his conference honors, he is also one of 35 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which goes to the best player in college baseball, and one of 12 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award, which honors the nation’s top catcher.
He is on the 60-member watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which goes to the nation’s top amateur baseball player.
Baylor will play in the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tournament against Oklahoma at 5 p.m. today.
