Ludy's Bears force rematch

WACO, Texas — The Bears have worked their way back from the brink of elimination.
Jay County High School graduate Josh Ludy had an RBI and a run Sunday evening as the host Baylor University baseball team won its third straight elimination game, 9-2 over Dallas Baptist, in the regional round of the NCAA Division I Tournament.
The victory sets up a rematch against Dallas Baptist today at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Super Regional.
The Bears (47-15), who are the No. 4 overall seed in the nation, dropped their tournament opener 4-2 Friday to Oral Roberts but have since won 11-6 over UT-Arlington, 5-2 over Oral Roberts and 9-2 over Dallas Baptist in the double-elimination tournament.
Ludy drove in Baylor’s first run Sunday against Dallas Baptist with a ground out in the first inning. He also walked in the third and then scored on a home run by Dan Evatt.
In Sunday’s victory over Oral Roberts, Ludy finished with a single, a double and an RBI. He hit his 15th home run of the season Saturday against UT-Arlington and also had a double as he went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Ninde leads first win
Maebry Ninde and Madison Reier scored in each of the final three innings Friday to lead Portland Optimist to its first win, 12-8 over previously undefeated Brewster Electric in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Ninde went 4-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, a triple, three runs and two RBIs for Optimist. Reier had four hits, three runs and two RBIs, and Heidi Cox finished with five hits and four RBIs.
Rieley Brewster led Brewster Electric with three hits, including an inside-the-park home run, three RBIs and two runs.
Nichols 5th, Williams 6th
MONTPELIER — Portland’s Travis Nichols and Richard Williams led the group of area drivers competing Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols turned in a fifth-place finish in the Thunder Cars race while Williams was sixth in the Super Streets event.
Steve Mills and Brian Baldauf, both of Portland, followed Nichols in 10th and 17th respectively. Fort Recovery’s Jamie Heiser was eighth behind Williams.
