A Portland businessman’s bid to win a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives received an endorsement Saturday from the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Indiana’s history.
Richard Lugar, a Republican who has served in the Senate since 1976, made a stop at the Jay County Courthouse on behalf of Bill Davis. Davis, making his first bid for public office, is attempting to unseat long-time District 33 State Representative Ron Liggett, a Democrat from Redkey.
Lugar, who is making endorsements in four Indiana House races considered critical by state party officials, spoke to a crowd of about 100 Republican supporters in the courthouse auditorium.
Saying that Davis’ run is just part of a team effort, he also urged those in attendance to support President Bush and GOP gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels.
“I look forward to working with the president, working with Mitch, and working with Bill,” Lugar said.
Liggett, who was first elected to the District 33 seat in 1992, will get support today from a high-level state official. Indiana Lt. Gov. Kathy Davis, who is running for re-election along with Democratic Gov. Joe Kernan, was scheduled to appear along with Liggett today at Arts Place in Portland.
Kernan also will be in town on Wednesday for the Jay County Democratic Party fall dinner.
The Liggett-Davis race is one of a handful selected by state GOP officials as crucial in the battle for control of the Indiana House, which is currently split 51-49 in favor of the Democratic Party. Liggett has defeated challenges by five different men since winning the seat from David Hoover in the fall of 1992.
During his speech, Lugar noted Davis’ service as a former leader of the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce and as a co-founded of the organization that became Jay County Development Corporation.
Davis and Lugar met privately for about 10 minutes prior to speeches by both men. Lugar also met briefly with Bruce Hosier, Steve Croyle and Sam Hubbard, Republican mayors from Portland, Winchester and Dunkirk, respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
