Lugar speaks the truth (9/28/04)
Editor's Mailbag
By To the editor:-
I agree with Jack Ronald’s remarks about Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) (in an editorial on Sept. 17). The senator is one of those very rare elected representatives who speaks the truth rather than saying what he thinks the populace wants to hear.
Our country is embroiled in a conflict with Iraq that has no direction, plan or apparent clue as what to do next.
As a Vietnam-era veteran, I can say with recollection of that era that many of the remarks, excuses and other attempts at damage control have been uttered before.
Then the war was in Southeast Asia. Today the same remarks are used to describe and/or justify the invasion and conflict in Iraq.
Someone once said that if we don’t learn from the mistakes of history we’re doomed to repeat those mistakes. Ostensibly, there is a lot of illiteracy in the nation’s capital.
