Mailing to target voter info (5/27/05)
Clerk's office to send out mass mailing next week
By By Mike Snyder-
An effort to clean up and improve the accuracy of the county’s voter registration list will begin with a mass mailing next week.
A post card will be mailed next week to each of the approximately 14,100 voters on the active voter registration list on Tuesday.
Jay County clerk Jane Ann Runyon said this morning that if the cards are not returned, if they are returned unsigned, or if they are returned by the postal service for an incorrect address, voters will be placed on an inactive list.
If those voters do not vote in elections in 2007 or 2008, they would then be purged from the registration.
The main target of the mailing is to identify those who have moved elsewhere in Jay County — or out of the county — since registering to vote.
If the voter receives the card at an address different from that listed on the card, he or she should provide the new address.
Runyon said she would like the cards returned as soon as possible.
The cards, which will have return postage paid, should begin arriving in the mailboxes of registered voters by late next week.
The mailings are part of an attempt to clean up the registration lists, which became swelled after state and federal rules on purging voters from the list were tightened in the mid-1990s.
The updated information will also be helpful when a statewide voter registration database is activated in October. Under that system, officials throughout Indiana will be able to check the registration status of a voter by name and the last four digits of the voter’s Social Security number or driver’s license.
The clerk’s office currently removes the names of registered voters who have died using obituaries from The Commercial Review and information provided by the local and state departments of health.[[In-content Ad]]
