Maitlen demo work could begin soon

Jay County Commissioners

By By STEVE GARBACZ-

Bids to raze the former Maitlen Motors dealership in Portland for the county's jail expansion came in lower than expected, much to the pleasure of the Jay County Commissioners.

The commissioners opened and tabled seven bids Monday afternoon for demolition of the building on the corner of Ship and Main streets in Portland, with the lowest bid coming in at $27,400.

The bid, submitted by A. Landon Excavating LLC., Portland, edged the second lowest bid of $28,000 entered by Shroyer Bros. Inc., Muncie. The third lowest jumped significantly to more than $50,000.

"I'm happy as heck with that 27," said commissioner Milo Miller Jr.

"I figured it'd be at least, 40, 45," agreed commissioner Faron Parr.

The commissioners toyed with the idea of having the county highway department aid in the demolition by hauling material from the site, but as bidders only offered around a $30 deduction per load, the commissioners scrapped the idea.

"We're probably looking at ... 50 loads or less," said county engineer Dan Watson as they weighed the value of the alternative.

"That's not worth having our trucks out there, $30," said Parr.

The commissioners tabled the bids for review by Watson and Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz and should award the job at their next meeting on Monday.

Once the project is awarded, there is a 10-day waiting period that must expire before work can begin, making the earliest possible start date April 16.

Once the building is leveled, the county will have to take soil borings and move utilities before construction on the expansion can begin. Badders said he met with officials from the City of Portland and hashed out civil details between the county and city and has prepared descriptions of easements that are ready to be reviewed by legal counsel.

The commissioners are still shooting to get the project out to bid and rolling by summer.

"Think we can have bids by June?" Miller asked.

"That's what we're shooting for," Badders said.

Bids received for the demolition are as follows:

Shroyer Bros. Inc, Muncie, $28,000 base bid, 30 days to complete, $20 reduction per load.

Focus Contracting, Avon, Ind., $80,000, 15 days, $90/load.

Chuck Samples General Contractor, Celina, Ohio, $65,300, 45 days, $5,400/load (The commissioners believe this amount was bid incorrectly.)

Apex Group Inc., Tipton, Ind., $86,754, to be completed by May 30, $35/load.

Baney Excavating and Construction, Muncie, $139,000, 60 days, $125/load.

A. Landon Excavating LLC., Portland, $27,400, to be completed by May 30, $30/load.

TJ's Concrete Work LLC., Portland, $50,287.50, 30 days, no per load reduction bid.[[In-content Ad]]
