Make a visit to Yorktown
Rays of Insight
Indiana 67 south out of Jay County. West on Indiana 28 to Wes-Del High School. South on Delaware County road 600 South to Yorktown Sports Complex.
By the end of the week I, and a couple of sets of Patriot parents, will have made that drive five times in a span of six days. I could probably make the trip there and back in my sleep already.
You should go Saturday.
The Jay County High School boys soccer team secured a spot in Saturday’s sectional championship game with a 2-1 win Wednesday over Delta. (See story above.)
And the girls can make it a Patriot doubleheader if they win in their sectional semifinal game tonight against Delta, a team they defeated 4-0 during the regular season.
The JCHS boys will play the host Tigers for the Class 2A Sectional 15 title at 2 p.m. And if the girls advance as well, they would play for their championship at 7 p.m.
So I suggest making a day out of it.
Go watch the boys team play Saturday afternoon. This will be their sixth straight appearance in a sectional championship game and a chance to win their fourth title in a span of five years.
If the girls are playing as well you’ll have a few hours to kill between games, and nearby Muncie offers plenty of options.
Go shopping. See a movie. Pick a restaurant and have a leisurely dinner. Or find a sports bar and watch some college football.
In fact, live college football is even an option.
Ball State University hosts Northern Illinois on Saturday as it tries to rebound from last weekend’s 45-43 loss to Kent State. That game starts at 3 p.m., so my plan is to head over to Scheumman Stadium and catch the second half between the Cardinals and the Huskies.
In fact, it’s a chance to see a former JCHS athlete in action. Kristen Ainsworth, who was a Patriot cheerleader and gymnast for four seasons, will be on the sidelines as a cheerleader for BSU.
And then return to YSC to see the girls play for the sectional crown.
A win tonight would send the Patriot girls to their eighth sectional championship game since 1999. They’re still looking for their first crown and they’re hungry for a rematch against Yorktown, a team they lost to 4-1 during the regular season and 3-1 in last season’s title game.
Yes both Jay County teams will be underdogs when they go up against the Tigers, whose boys and girls are both the defending champions. But that will make it even more fun to watch if the Patriots are able to pull off an upset or two.
Chances for two sectional titles in one day don’t come around very often. Take advantage of the opportunity.[[In-content Ad]]
