Many hands helped make dinner (12/09/2008)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

What an amazing community. Thanks to a whole bunch of folks with a common vision, we served more than 460 meals on Thanksgiving Day. By using the ovens of many, we were able to prepare 26 turkeys, two large hams, two large pork roasts and 12 steam table plans of dressing. The added dishes prepared by your in your homes saw our tables overflowing with abundance.

Many sororities, service clubs, churches, lodges and individuals reached into their treasuries and wallets to donate generously for the numerous purchases for this day. The members of one church made the trip to a bakery to select the pumpkin pies destined for the homebound. Another church invited members to take our dressing recipe in hand and purchase ingredients for the stuffing that is prepared onsite. A local business prepared and donated several dozen pickled eggs, several individuals deviled eggs or donated items as needed, and the list continues.

The kitchen was a beehive of activity as volunteers dropped by to prepare the carry-out meals. Drivers organized their routes and were lined up to distribute them to all parts of the county. Once that detail was completed, the morning group of volunteers left to celebrate with their families and the next set of volunteers entered to assist as needed.

Our friends and neighbors walking in the door felt the brotherly love that was evident throughout the room. Each recipient carried two to three plates of the traditional dinner to their table knowing more food awaited for seconds. Each was promised leftovers to carry home for enjoyment through the following days. The fellowship was warm and rewarding as we saw many hungry hearts, as well as empty stomachs, filled.

Thanks to this amazing community we saw evidence of God's hands and feet at work. We hope you all feel a little warmer in your own hearts for the good we can do together.

With sincere thanks, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner committee - Carol Smith, chairperson, Russ Smith, Pastor Darrell Borders, Ramona Clark, Bill & Rose Fennig, Art Hall, Thurman & Betty Hisey, Paul & Helen Martin, Pete & Marna McAbee, Ralph, Thelma and Cody Myers, Dolphus & Nora Stephens, Emily Steveson, Pastor Mark Streitelmeier and Judy Zearbaugh
