Mark this on the calendar (07/28/2008)

Editorial

The Jay County Fair schedule is a little different this year, and that's going to require a few minutes of study if you want to make the most of your fair-going experience in 2008.

Fair board members and adult 4-H leaders worked hard to keep 4-H activities and the larger fair together this year, but compromises were necessary. And that meant 4-H occupies the front half of the week in a kind of condensed format.

Judging took place in many categories over the weekend, and by Thursday morning it may be hard to find evidence of 4-H on the fairgrounds.

In many ways, the compromise makes sense. It's certainly the best option available under the circumstances.

But it could have some unintended consequences unless folks mark their calendars carefully.

The biggest change is this: The annual 4-H livestock auction is Wednesday afternoon instead of Saturday morning.

It's been on Saturday morning for as long as anyone can remember, so this change is going to take some getting used to.

But it's important to make the adjustment because of all the effort and time 4-H members have put in on their livestock projects.

The annual auction, where kids get a premium over market price for their animals thanks to the generosity of local businesses, industries, and individuals, is the best way we know of to recognize all that work.

Auction premiums have gone into countless college funds for 4-H members. It's safe to say there are times when the bidding at a 4-H livestock sale literally changes kids' lives. It can be that important.

That's why it's equally important to make note of the schedule change.

Mark your calendar. The livestock sale begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the main show arena. Based upon past years, it's likely it will run until 7 or 8 p.m. that night.

If you're a regular bidder, don't forget the change. Be there.

If you've never attended or bid at a 4-H livestock auction, stop by.

It's hard to say you've actually experienced a Jay County Fair until you've raised your hand as a bidder. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
