Masters unopposed to re-election (10/11/2008)
Due to an editing error, the questionnaire responses of unopposed Jay School Board candidate Michael Masters were omitted in Friday's edition of The Commercial Review.
Masters, a resident of 9661 West 400 South, Redkey, owns an insurance agency in Dunkirk.
A 1983 graduate of Jay County High School, he received a degree in marketing from Indiana Vocational Technical College in 1985.
He is president of the Westlawn Elementary School PTO and is exalted ruler of the Dunkirk Elks Lodge.
He's also a past president of Dunkirk Junior League Baseball.
His responses follow.
What's the biggest challenge facing the Jay School Corporation going into the future?
Masters: "To continue to be fiscally responsible during a very turbulent time in the economy without compromising the quality of education for our students."
What sort of report card would you give the Jay School Corporation in terms of quality of education being provided, the quality of the physical facilities, and fiscal management?
Masters: "Education, A. We are doing well, but there is always room for improvement. Physical facilities, A-plus. Buildings, equipment, etc. look better than ever, enhancing our students' education and community pride. Fiscal management, A. Corporation continues to receive grants for much-needed programs and we have been able to make leaps and bounds with little effort on our taxpayers."
How do you envision your role as a school board member?
Masters: "To do the work of the people in our community. To accomplish great things for our kids both academically and morally. To get the maximum results at the least possible cost to prevent burdening our taxpayers."
If you could point to one accomplishment at the end of your service on the school board, what would you like it to be?
Masters: "When originally being elected in 2004, I was presented with a building project that I could not accept due to the cost. We have been able through quality fiscal management to attain what was needed and most of what we wanted for several million dollars less. We did this without compromising the quality of education."[[In-content Ad]]
