May ballot shapes up (02/24/07)
Filing for the May 8 primary closed at noon Friday with most incumbents - including Portland and Dunkirk mayors - looking for a positive nod from the voters to run for another term in office.
Although they won't face opposition in the May primary, both mayors will be pitted against opponents in the fall election.
Incumbent Portland Mayor Hosier, who is completing his first four-year term, was one of the first to file for re-election on the first filing day; but Democrat Jim Sanders, and current Portland City Council member, also an early filer, had said a few weeks earlier he would challenge the Republican mayor for the job.
Candidates for the District 4 and District 7 seats on the Portland City County will see competition in May when Republicans Dennis M. Mason Jr. and Donald P. Gillespie seek their party's nod for the District 4 seat and Republicans Kent McClung and Mike Weesner face off for the District 7 seat nod. Also filing before the noon deadline Friday for the District 7 seat was Democrat Michael Martin, 1214 S. Shank St. He will be unopposed in the primary.
In Dunkirk, first term mayor Republican Sam Hubbard is also running unopposed in the primary but will be facing a Democrat- Ronald Hunt or Raymond Pettus Sr. - in the fall election.
Seeking a Democratic Party nod for the District 3 Dunkirk Council seat are incumbent A. Craig Faulkner and newcomer, Richard E. Buckner. Republican Charmaine M. O'Conner is running unopposed for her party's nomination for the seat.
Although candidates in Bryant, Pennville, and Salamonia have until July 2 to file to run in the fall election, Scott F. Twigg, 0106 S. Francis St., Bryant, has filed to run for a seat on the Bryant Town Council, and in Pennville, incumbent Krista M. Scholer has filed for clerk-treasurer. Rodne E. Penrod has filed for the middle district Pennville Town Council seat, and Ron Kreps is seeking re-election to the south district seat.
